Haitian Politician Edgard Leblanc Fils Condemns Macron's 'Total Morons' Remarks About Leaders
A member of Haiti's transitional presidential council has expressed disapproval over comments made by French President Emmanuel Macron. Macron was recorded referring to the Caribbean nation's leaders as "total morons." This incident occurred during the G20 meeting in Brazil earlier this month, where Macron criticised the council's decision to remove Prime Minister Garry Conille after only six months in office.

Edgard Leblanc Fils, the council's former president, responded to Macron's remarks, stating that they insulted a nation enduring difficult times. He emphasised that Macron's interference in Haitian affairs was inappropriate, especially as he supported Conille, describing him as "formidable." The council had replaced Conille with Alix Didier Fils-Aimé as the new prime minister.
Haiti's Response and Historical Context
In response to Macron's comments, Haiti's Foreign Ministry summoned France's ambassador to express their discontent. They labelled the president's remarks as "unfriendly and inappropriate." Leblanc also took this opportunity to criticise France for its historical actions, highlighting how Haiti was forced to pay a substantial sum for its independence from colonial rule.
Leblanc stated, "Haiti’s independence, acquired at the cost of blood, should not be subject to any compensation. This ransom must be returned. It will be returned sooner or later." His comments reflect ongoing tensions regarding the financial reparations Haiti paid to France following its independence.
Current Challenges in Haiti
Macron's remarks come amid escalating gang violence in Haiti’s capital and other regions, exacerbating the country's political instability. The situation highlights the challenges faced by Haitian authorities as they navigate both internal and external pressures. The transitional council continues to grapple with maintaining stability while addressing these complex issues.
The controversy surrounding Macron’s comments underscores the delicate nature of international relations and historical grievances. As Haiti deals with its current crises, these diplomatic tensions add another layer of complexity to an already challenging situation.
The incident serves as a reminder of the historical ties between Haiti and France and the ongoing impact of past events on present-day relations. The call for reparations remains a significant issue for many Haitians who seek justice for their nation's past struggles.
