Haiti's Health Minister Dismissed Following Deadly Gang Attack on Port-au-Prince Hospital

Haiti's health minister, Duckenson Lorthe, has been dismissed following a violent gang assault on the largest public hospital in Port-au-Prince. This incident resulted in the deaths of two journalists and a police officer. Justice Minister Patrick Pelissier will temporarily take over Lorthe's duties until a new health minister is appointed, according to government officials who spoke anonymously.

Haiti Health Minister Dismissed After Attack

The attack occurred when gang members stormed the General Hospital, firing indiscriminately at reporters covering its reopening. This event is considered one of the most severe attacks on Haitian media in recent history. Seven other journalists sustained injuries during the incident.

Gang Violence and Control

Gang violence has escalated in Haiti, with gangs believed to control 85% of Port-au-Prince. These groups have launched coordinated attacks on prisons, police stations, and the main international airport, further destabilising the capital. The country remains in crisis as it struggles to organise elections to restore democratic governance.

Following the attack, Johnson "Izo" André, a prominent gang leader associated with the Viv Ansanm group, claimed responsibility through a social media video. He stated that the gang coalition had not approved the hospital's reopening.

Security Concerns at Hospital Event

Jean Feguens Regala, a photographer who survived the attack, mentioned that journalists were invited by the health ministry but found security lacking at the site. "The fact that the minister of health invited us, you feel that preparations have been made already," Regala told The Associated Press. However, police units were reportedly unaware of the event.

The absence of Health Minister Lorthe at the event remains unexplained. His removal from office follows this significant security lapse and tragic outcome.

Haiti is currently governed by a transitional council composed of representatives from political parties, business groups, and civil society organisations. The council is tasked with navigating the country through this period of instability and towards democratic elections.
