Six Guatemalans Charged with Human Smuggling in Connection with 2021 Deadly Mexico Truck Crash
Six individuals from Guatemala face charges related to human smuggling after a tragic truck accident in Mexico in 2021. This crash resulted in the deaths of over 50 migrants. Arrests were made in both Guatemala and Texas, as announced by US and Guatemalan officials. The incident involved a truck carrying at least 160 migrants, many of whom were Guatemalans, which collided with a pedestrian bridge support in Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas.

The arrests coincided with the third anniversary of this tragic event. An indictment was revealed on Monday in the Southern District of Texas. Guatemalan authorities detained Tomas Quino Canil, 36; Alberto Marcario Chitic, 31; Oswaldo Manuael Zavala Quino, 24; and Josefa Quino Canil de Zavala, 42. Meanwhile, Jorge Agapito Ventura was apprehended at his residence in Cleveland, Texas. A sixth arrest was also reported by Guatemalan officials, though the name was redacted in the US federal indictment.
Charges and Allegations
The accused face charges including conspiracy, endangering lives, causing serious injuries, and resulting in death. The indictment accuses them of planning to smuggle migrants from Guatemala through Mexico to the US for financial gain. In some instances involving unaccompanied minors, they allegedly provided scripts for what to say if caught.
The smugglers reportedly transported migrants on foot and using various vehicles like microbuses, cattle trucks, and tractor trailers. "The tragedy that occurred three years ago today in Chiapas is further proof that human smugglers are ruthless, callous and dangerous, intending migrants should not believe their lives," stated US Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas.
International Cooperation
Guatemala's Interior Minister Francisco Jiménez identified the defendants as part of a criminal group known as Los Quino. He mentioned that US officials have requested the extradition of those arrested in Guatemala. On Monday, authorities executed 15 search warrants across Guatemala with support from the US and Mexican governments.
This case highlights the ongoing challenges and dangers associated with human smuggling operations. The cooperation between countries aims to dismantle such networks and prevent further tragedies.
