Newcomer Stefanos Kasselakis Takes Charge of Greece's Syriza Party in Surprising Election Result

Businessman Stefanos Kasselakis has won the leadership of Greece's main opposition bloc, the left-wing Syriza party. He defeated Effie Achtsioglou in a runoff contest and had just under 57 per cent of the votes late Sunday with 70 per cent of precincts reporting.

The Greek political landscape recently witnessed a significant shift as Stefanos Kasselakis, a 35-year-old businessman with no prior political experience, was elected to lead the Syriza party, Greece's main opposition bloc. Kasselakis triumphed over Effie Achtsioglou, a 38-year-old lawmaker and former labor minister in a tightly contested runoff election.

Unexpected Victory

Stefanos Kasselakis

Kasselakis' victory came as a surprise to many. He defeated Achtsioglou by securing just under 57 per cent of the votes late Sunday with 70 per cent of precincts reporting. On the other hand, Achtsioglou managed to bag just over 43 per cent of the votes. In an act of sportsmanship, Achtsioglou called her rival to congratulate him even while votes were still being counted.

Voter Turnout

About 136,000 Greeks turned out to vote for this election - significantly fewer than those who had participated in the first round. This could be attributed to various factors including voter fatigue or lack of enthusiasm among voters due to the candidates’ profiles.

An Unknown Candidate Rises

Prior to his candidacy for leadership of Syriza party, Kasselakis was relatively unknown within Greece’s public sphere despite being resident in Miami and having his name on Syriza's at-large list during national elections. In such elections in Greece, depending on each party's share of votes, fifteen out of three hundred lawmakers are elected 'at-large', which can include expatriates like Kasselakis himself. During recent national polls held in May and June respectively; Syriza succeeded in electing four and three lawmakers from their at-large list. However back then; Kasselakis standing ninth on that list stood no chance.

Turning the Tide

The tide turned in Kasselakis's favour when he unveiled a series of proposals for the party late August. Following this, he released a video that was just over four minutes long, detailing his life and presenting his vision for Greece under his leadership. This move could have played a crucial role in boosting his popularity among voters and ultimately leading to his victory.

In conclusion, Stefanos Kasselakis's election as the leader of Greece's main opposition bloc marks an interesting development in Greek politics. His victory signifies not only the acceptance of new faces within political circles but also highlights how unconventional strategies can lead to surprising results. As he steps into this significant role with no prior political experience, all eyes will be on him to see how he navigates through the complex world of politics and what changes he brings about for Syriza and Greece at large.
