Newcomer Stefanos Kasselakis Takes Charge of Greece's Syriza Party in Surprising Election Result

Businessman Stefanos Kasselakis has won the leadership of Greece's main opposition bloc, the left-wing Syriza party. He defeated Effie Achtsioglou in a runoff contest and had just under 57 per cent of the votes late Sunday with 70 per cent of precincts reporting.

An Unknown Candidate Rises

In such elections in Greece, depending on each party's share of votes, fifteen out of three hundred lawmakers are elected 'at-large', which can include expatriates like Kasselakis himself. During recent national polls held in May and June respectively; Syriza succeeded in electing four and three lawmakers from their at-large list. However back then; Kasselakis standing ninth on that list stood no chance.

The tide turned in Kasselakis's favour when he unveiled a series of proposals for the party late August. Following this, he released a video that was just over four minutes long, detailing his life and presenting his vision for Greece under his leadership.
