‘Great Leader, Great Guy’: Trump Hosts Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif, Asim Munir At White House

US President Donald Trump recently welcomed Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to the White House, marking a positive turn in US-Pakistan relations. The meeting coincided with Sharif's visit to the United States for the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, where he is scheduled to speak at the General Debate on Friday.

During their meeting, Trump was joined by Pakistan's army chief, General Asim Munir, who had previously been hosted for lunch by Trump earlier this summer. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also attended the discussions. This visit underscores a shift in Washington's approach towards Islamabad, reflecting improved diplomatic ties.

Improved Diplomatic Relations

The relationship between the US and Pakistan has seen significant improvement after years of tension. The US had halted military aid to Pakistan in 2018 following its withdrawal from Afghanistan. Additionally, Washington's drone strike programme and closer ties with India further strained relations. However, recent developments indicate a reset in these ties.

Sharif's brief visit to Washington from New York was his first official trip to the White House as Prime Minister. He arrived at around 4:52 pm and departed approximately an hour and a half later. This meeting follows an earlier encounter between Trump and Sharif in New York during a multilateral meeting with leaders from Arab nations.

Trade Discussions and Economic Cooperation

The US and Pakistan are currently negotiating a trade agreement that includes investment commitments from Washington. Islamabad has already secured a favourable tariff rate of 19% on its exports to the US, significantly lower than India's 50% levy. In July, Trump announced plans for collaboration on developing Pakistan's oil reserves.

Pakistan's leadership has praised Trump's role in mediating tensions with India earlier this year. They credited him with facilitating a ceasefire during conflicts in May, although India has denied such claims. Islamabad even proposed nominating Trump for a Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts.

Significance of Military Leadership

General Asim Munir is considered one of Pakistan's most influential figures, having visited the US twice since June. The Pakistani military holds substantial sway over critical issues like foreign policy and internal politics. Munir's presence at these meetings highlights the importance of military diplomacy in strengthening bilateral relations.

The Biden administration had seen deteriorating relations with Pakistan due to limited high-level engagements. Former Pakistani ambassador Maleeha Lodhi noted that Trump's administration acknowledges Pakistan's strategic significance both regionally and in the Middle East.

This renewed engagement between the two countries signals potential future cooperation on various fronts, including economic development and regional stability. As both nations work towards finalising trade agreements and exploring energy partnerships, their diplomatic ties appear poised for further growth.
