Gopi Thotakura Makes History as First Indian Space Tourist with Blue Origin

Gopi Thotakura, an entrepreneur and pilot, made history on Sunday by becoming the first Indian space tourist aboard Amazon founder Jeff Bezos's Blue Origin NS-25 mission. This significant event marked him as the second Indian to venture into space, following Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma of the Indian Army in 1984. The launch, which took place at Launch Site One in West Texas, was part of Blue Origin's seventh human flight and the 25th flight for the New Shepard program.

The NS-25 mission crew comprised six members, including Thotakura, Mason Angel, Sylvain Chiron, Kenneth L. Hess, Carol Schaller, and former Air Force Captain Ed Dwight. Dwight, notably selected by President John F. Kennedy in 1961 as the nation’s first Black astronaut candidate, had never previously had the opportunity to fly. With this flight, New Shepard has now taken 37 individuals into space.

Phil Joyce, Senior Vice President of New Shepard, expressed gratitude towards the astronaut customers for allowing them to provide this life-altering experience. He emphasized their role as pioneers in advancing Blue Origin's mission to create a pathway to space for Earth's benefit. The New Shepard vehicle, a fully reusable sub-orbital launch vehicle developed by Blue Origin for space tourism, has now successfully completed its seventh human flight.

Gopi Thotakura, aged 30, is not only an accomplished pilot but also a co-founder of Preserve Life Corp, a global center for holistic wellness and applied health. His passion for flying encompasses a wide range of aircraft including jets, bush planes, aerobatic planes, seaplanes, gliders, and hot air balloons. Thotakura's adventurous spirit recently led him to the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.

During their journey aboard the New Shepard rocket, the crew experienced speeds more than three times the speed of sound and soared past the Kármán line—considered the boundary of outer space at 100 kilometers above Earth's surface. This brief venture into space allowed them moments of weightlessness and provided stunning views of Earth through the cabin windows.

The mission also had an educational component; each astronaut carried a postcard to space on behalf of Blue Origin’s foundation, Club for the Future. This initiative aims to inspire young people to pursue careers in STEAM fields (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) for Earth's benefit. Notably, New Shepard’s design ensures that nearly 99% of its dry mass is reusable and its engine produces only water vapor as a byproduct—highlighting Blue Origin's commitment to environmental sustainability.

The NS-25 mission patch features symbols representing various aspects of the crew's backgrounds and aspirations: The Gemini spacecraft nods to Dwight’s aerospace training era; a hand lifting the crew capsule acknowledges his extensive artwork; a sunrise symbolizes Angel and Schaller’s desire for experiencing the overview effect; and mountains represent Thotakura and Chiron’s passion for climbing and skiing.

Following a pause in its suborbital tourism program due to a liftoff malfunction in September 2022 that resulted in an uncrewed flight ending in flames shortly after takeoff, Blue Origin's successful completion of the NS-25 mission marks a significant milestone in commercial space travel.
