Google Doodle Raises A Mug To Coffee Lovers With Flat White Celebration - Know It s History

History of flat white

On March 11, 2011, the flat white was officially added to the Oxford English Dictionary. This significant addition recognized the flat white as a beloved coffee beverage consisting of steamed milk poured over a shot of espresso, as reported by The Mint.

Historically, it is speculated that the flat white originated in Australia and New Zealand, where it gained popularity in the coffee culture. The drink is believed to have first appeared on menus in Sydney and Auckland during the 1980s, marking its early adoption and subsequent worldwide acclaim.

How is flat white made?

A flat white is composed of an espresso shot topped with steamed milk and a thin layer of micro-foam, traditionally served in a ceramic cup. Among coffee connoisseurs desiring less foam in their beverage, flat whites are favoured as they are perceived to be "flatter" than cappuccinos or lattes.

In many cafes across Australia and New Zealand, customers are often enticed into trying the drink by baristas showcasing their skills and creating beautiful artwork while preparing it. Over the years, the methods for preparing flat whites have evolved alongside changes in coffee culture. Originally made with whole milk, it is now common to see Aussies and Kiwis ordering it with plant-based milk, including oat milk.

The flat white is experiencing increasing popularity and has become a favourite as it has spread across the globe. It has delighted many and has become a staple in numerous nations. According to Google Doodle's description, "No matter the origins, coffee lovers worldwide agree it's a favourite morning or arvo (afternoon) pick-me-up!"
