Donald J. Trump has returned to power, taking the oath as the 47th President of the United States. In his inaugural speech, Trump, aged 78, declared January 20 as a day of liberation for America. He promised swift changes and described this period as the start of a golden age for the nation.

Trump's inauguration ceremony took place indoors at the US Capitol due to cold weather. He vowed that America would regain its status as the most powerful and respected nation globally. "The golden age of America begins right now," he stated, emphasising that the country would flourish and be respected worldwide.

Trump's Vision and Immediate Plans

Trump outlined several immediate actions, including declaring a national emergency at the US-Mexico border. He also announced plans to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America and reclaim the Panama Canal. His agenda reflects a strongman persona with a focus on resetting US policies in areas like immigration, tariffs, and energy.

During his address, Trump criticised the previous administration for failing to manage domestic crises effectively. "We now have a government that cannot manage a simple crisis at home while at the same time stumble into a continuing catalog of catastrophic events abroad," he said.

Historic Comeback and Electoral Victory

Trump's return to the White House marks a significant comeback after leaving Washington four years ago under challenging circumstances. His victory over Democratic rival Kamala Harris in the November 5 election was seen as one of the most momentous comebacks in American political history.

The new president also criticised the Biden administration for its handling of various issues. "We had a government that failed to protect our magnificent law-abiding citizens but provided sanctuary and protection for dangerous criminals," he remarked.

The ceremony was attended by notable figures, including former presidents Joe Biden, Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush. JD Vance was sworn in as Vice President before Trump took his oath. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar attended as Prime Minister Narendra Modi's special envoy.

Trump's family members, including his wife Melania, daughter Ivanka, and son-in-law Jared Kushner, were present at the event. Billionaires Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and Tim Cook also attended.

Promises for America's Future

In his speech, Trump pledged to increase domestic oil production and revoke programmes promoting electric vehicles. He blamed inflation on overspending and rising energy prices. "That's why today I will also declare a national energy emergency," he announced.

Trump also promised to end censorship and restore free speech in America through an executive order. "After years and years of illegal and unconstitutional restriction of expression, I will also sign an executive order to stop all censorship and bring back free speech to America," he said.

A Mandate for Change

Trump described his electoral victory as a mandate to reverse past betrayals and restore faith, wealth, democracy, and freedom to the people. "From this moment on, America's decline is over," he declared.

Reflecting on his journey back to power, Trump shared a personal experience: "Just a few months ago, in a beautiful Pennsylvania field, an assassin's bullet ripped through my ear." He expressed gratitude for surviving the attempt on his life, attributing it to divine intervention.

The inauguration ceremony concluded with Trump's oath: "I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States." The event marked a new chapter in American politics under Trump's leadership.
