Global Reactions to Assad's Ousting: Jubilation and Alarm Across the Middle East

The fall of Syria's authoritarian regime has sparked mixed reactions across the Middle East and beyond. Many Syrians, both expatriates and residents, celebrated the end of a 14-year rule marked by civil conflict. This period resulted in half a million deaths and millions displaced globally. However, concerns about further instability in the already volatile region have also emerged.

Reactions to Assads Ousting from Syria

In Lebanon, numerous Syrians rushed to the Masnaa border crossing to return home despite uncertainties. Sami Abdel-Latif, a refugee from Hama, expressed relief, stating, "Anything is better than Bashar." Malak Matar, preparing to return to Damascus, shared similar sentiments, emphasising the need for Syrians to organise and rebuild their nation.

Regional Reactions and Security Measures

Neighbouring countries have taken steps to secure their borders. Lebanon announced the closure of all but one land border crossing with Syria. Jordan also shut a border crossing. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israeli forces temporarily seized a buffer zone in the Golan Heights after Syrian troops abandoned their positions.

Airstrikes were reported on military sites near Damascus, previously targeted by Israel. Iran, a key ally of Assad, insisted that Syria's future should be determined without foreign interference. The Iraqi government expressed support for dialogue efforts in Syria. Egypt's foreign ministry called for a comprehensive political process to establish peace.

International Perspectives on Assad's Fall

European governments welcomed Assad's departure while urging stability. Kaja Kallas, the EU's foreign policy chief, described it as "a positive and long-awaited development." German Chancellor Olaf Scholz emphasised the importance of restoring law and order quickly. France's foreign ministry acknowledged the suffering of the Syrian people.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer urged protection for civilians and minorities while ensuring aid reaches those in need. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for calm and an orderly political transition. Russia expressed concern over Syria's dramatic events, while Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha commented on Assad's fate.

US Response to Developments

In Washington, President Joe Biden met with his national security team to discuss Syria's situation. Before Assad's fall was confirmed, President-elect Donald Trump stated on social media that Syria is not an ally and advised against US involvement in its affairs.

The US maintains approximately 900 troops in Syria, collaborating with Kurdish allies in the northeast to prevent an Islamic State resurgence. The international community continues to monitor developments closely as the region navigates this significant change.

The fall of Assad's regime marks a pivotal moment for Syria and its neighbours. While many celebrate the end of his rule, concerns about future stability remain prevalent. The focus now shifts towards rebuilding and ensuring peace in a region long plagued by conflict.
