Rex Heuermann, a Long Island architect, was sentenced to life in prison with no possibility of parole after admitting responsibility for killing eight women linked to the Gilgo Beach murders. In court, relatives of victims delivered emotional statements as the sentencing concluded a long-running investigation into one of New York’s most widely followed unsolved cases.

Relatives of victims of the Gilgo Beach serial killer spoke in court on Wednesday. Rex Heuermann then received a life sentence with no chance of parole. Heuermann admitted blame for eight murders. Heuermann told the court, "I am responsible for the crimes.\" Heuermann also said, \"The words I would say would have no meaning,\" before sentencing.

The sentencing followed a long investigation into disappearances on Long Island. Over time, the case became a major public mystery in New York. Police later found skeletal remains in sandy brush near a coastal parkway. Those discoveries drove documentaries, books, and podcasts. Heuermann, a 62-year-old Long Island architect, had hidden violent crimes for years.

Judge Timothy Mazzei questioned Heuermann during the hearing. \"Are you at least a little sorry?\" Mazzei asked in a sharp tone. Heuermann nodded and seemed to mouth yes. The judge then said, \"You are disgusting - a despicable man, if you are a man at all. And you are a coward.\" Spectators jeered as officers led Heuermann out in handcuffs.

While victims’ relatives spoke, Heuermann sat at the defence table. Heuermann looked ahead and tapped fingers lightly. Amanda Funderburg, Melissa Barthelemy’s sister, told Heuermann to look at her. Heuermann glanced over, but kept eyes slightly down. \"I hope you suffer,\" Funderburg said, recalling a taunting call received days after Barthelemy vanished.

Jasmine Robinson, a cousin of Jessica Taylor, addressed Heuermann in court. \"A million years isnt enough,\" Robinson said. \"Nothing will ever make this right.\" Robinson also told Heuermann, \"You fill me with so much repugnance, I cant stand it.\" JoAnn Mack, Valerie Mack’s mother, said her daughter had dreams, and you took them all away from her.

JoAnn Mack also spoke about the limits of punishment. \"Justice has been done, but it cant replace what has been taken,\" Mack said. Outside court, Liliana Waterman spoke about Megan Waterman’s death. Waterman was 3 when Megan Waterman disappeared. Liliana Waterman said waiting to face the killer took an entire lifetime. \"She can finally rest in peace,\" Waterman said.

Heuermann pleaded guilty in April to seven murders. The victims were Barthelemy, Valerie Mack, Taylor, Megan Waterman, Amber Lynn Costello, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, and Sandra Costilla. Heuermann also admitted in court to killing Karen Vergata. Heuermann was never charged in Vergata’s death. Heuermann said victims were strangled, and some bodies were dismembered.

Most victims disappeared between 2000 and 2010, and all remains were found on Long Island. Many were discovered along Ocean Parkway near Gilgo Beach. Costilla’s remains were found in 1993 in the Hamptons. Vergata’s remains were found in 1996 on Fire Island. The case linked many disappearances once seen as separate and overlooked.

Maureen Brainard-Barnes left behind two children. The children were 7 and 1 when Brainard-Barnes disappeared in 2007. The children told the court how loss shaped their lives. Melissa Cann, Brainard-Barnes’ sister, cried while speaking. Cann described decades of wondering if more could have been done. Cann said, that guilt is not mine to carry. It is for Rex and Rex alone.

The wider case surfaced in 2010 during a search for Shannan Gilbert. Gilbert was a sex worker who went missing, and death was later ruled accidental drowning. Investigators then began finding remains along Ocean Parkway. The investigation later stalled for years. In 2022, detectives tied Heuermann to a pickup truck seen when one victim disappeared in 2010.

Detectives later used DNA evidence to strengthen the case. They matched DNA from a pizza crust Heuermann threw away in Manhattan. That profile matched genetic material from degraded hair fragments on victims’ remains. Police also relied on cellphone and tracking data. The records suggested Heuermann arranged meetings with some victims shortly before they vanished.

After Heuermann’s 2023 arrest, prosecutors seized computer material. Prosecutors said files included a plan for the killings. Documents included checklists about limiting noise and cleaning bodies. The lists also mentioned destroying evidence. These details helped explain how the crimes stayed hidden. The sentencing marked the end of one of New York’s most difficult investigations.

Heuermann will be moved to a state prison. Heuermann spent the past three years alone in a segregated Suffolk County jail cell. During that time, Heuermann read crime novels. Heuermann also had brief correspondence with the Happy Face Killer. Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney called Heuermann a monster. Tierney said there was nothing Heuermann could say to reduce the deeds.

Tierney also challenged the idea of real regret. \"There is no doubt this defendant is sorry,\" Tierney said. \"He is sorry he got caught.\" Defence lawyer Michael Brown said Heuermann has cried. Brown said there may be some sincerity in signs of remorse. Brown added Heuermann seemed normal in their meetings, despite the crimes. \"Hes somewhat of a charismatic figure when you talk to him,\" Brown said.

As part of the guilty plea, Heuermann agreed to cooperate with the FBI’s behavioral analysis unit. The stated aim was to help catch other serial killers. Heuermann will remain imprisoned for life with no parole option. Families left court after hearing the sentence and their statements. The hearing closed a long chapter for those who waited decades for answers.
