Gaza Starvation Crisis: Half a Million People Facing Famine
A UN report exposes the alarming starvation crisis in Gaza, with over half a million people affected. The situation surpasses recent near-famines in Afghanistan and Yemen, and the risk of famine is escalating due to insufficient aid.
In a report released on Thursday, the United Nations and other agencies have highlighted the dire humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, revealing that over half a million people, approximately a quarter of the population, are facing starvation. The report underscores the severity of the food crisis in Gaza, surpassing even the near-famines witnessed in Afghanistan and Yemen in recent years.

Insufficient Aid Exacerbating Hunger
The report emphasizes that the risk of famine is escalating daily due to insufficient aid reaching Gaza. Arif Husain, chief economist for the UN's World Food Programme, expressed grave concern, stating that the scale and speed of the hunger crisis in Gaza are unprecedented. The report attributes the dire situation to Israel's bombardment and siege on the territory in response to Hamas's October 7th attack.
Ongoing Conflict and Health Sector Collapse
Despite Israel's claims of clearing out Hamas militants from northern Gaza, the report indicates that months of fighting lie ahead in the south. The conflict, sparked by Hamas's deadly rampage and hostage-taking in Israel, has resulted in the deaths of nearly 20,000 Palestinians. Over 1.9 million Gaza residents, representing more than 80% of the population, have been displaced from their homes, with many seeking refuge in UN shelters.
The war has also caused the collapse of Gaza's health sector. Only nine out of 36 health facilities remain partially functional, all located in the south, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). WHO relief workers reported distressing scenes in two hospitals in northern Gaza, where patients with untreated wounds cried out for water, medical supplies were scarce, and bodies lay in the courtyard.
Aid Delivery Challenges and Diplomatic Efforts
Amidst the ongoing bombardment and fighting, internet and communication services that had been disrupted for several days gradually began to be restored across the territory. Meanwhile, negotiations are underway at the UN Security Council on an Arab-sponsored resolution calling for a halt in fighting to facilitate increased aid deliveries. However, a vote on the resolution has been postponed twice in the hopes of gaining US support or allowing it to pass after an earlier cease-fire call was vetoed.
The report highlights the failure of US efforts to ensure greater aid reaches Palestinians. Despite initial restrictions on food, water, medicine, and fuel deliveries into Gaza, Israel began allowing a limited amount of aid through Egypt after pressure from the US. However, UN agencies estimate that only 10% of Gaza's food needs have been met in recent weeks.
While Israel has recently increased the number of aid trucks entering Gaza through the Kerem Shalom crossing, challenges persist. A blast on the Palestinian side of the crossing on Thursday morning forced the UN to halt aid pickups, resulting in the deaths of at least four people. The cause of the blast is yet to be confirmed, with Palestinian authorities blaming Israel.
Escalating Food Crisis and Health Concerns
The report, compiled by 23 UN and non-governmental agencies, reveals that the entire population of Gaza is facing a food crisis, with 576,600 people at catastrophic or starvation levels. Arif Husain, the World Food Programme economist, emphasizes that hunger is widespread in Gaza, with people at risk of disease outbreaks due to weakened immune systems.
Israel's Continued Offensive and Hamas's Response
Israel remains committed to its offensive, aiming to eliminate Hamas's military capabilities and secure the release of hostages captured during the October 7th rampage. Hamas and other militants killed approximately 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and captured around 240 others on that day. Despite Israel's ground offensive, Hamas continues to demonstrate its military strength by firing rockets at central Israel.
International Response and Civilian Casualties
The United States has expressed support for Israel's campaign while urging greater efforts to protect civilians. The US encourages Israel to shift to more targeted operations focused on Hamas leaders and their tunnel network. The Health Ministry in Hamas-run Gaza reported a death toll of over 19,600 since the start of the war, without distinguishing between civilian and combatant deaths.
Health Facilities Under Attack
In recent weeks, Israeli forces have raided several health facilities in northern Gaza, detaining and expelling individuals for interrogation. On Thursday, troops stormed the Palestinian Red Crescent's ambulance center in the Jabaliya refugee camp, taking away paramedics and ambulance crews. The WHO team that visited two hospitals in northern Gaza described Ahli Hospital as a place where people are waiting to die, with limited medical staff and resources.
The humanitarian crisis in Gaza demands urgent international attention and action to alleviate the suffering of its population. Addressing the insufficient aid, ongoing conflict, and attacks on health facilities is crucial to preventing further deterioration and loss of life.
