Gaza's 'Safe Zone' Under Siege: Food Scarcity and Sudden Israeli Strikes

An Israeli airstrike hit a residential building near Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, Gaza, injuring at least seven people, according to hospital officials and witnesses on Wednesday. The hospital is located within the Israeli-designated humanitarian safe zone, where Palestinians have been directed to seek refuge.

Impact on Displaced Families

Displaced families from eastern Khan Younis, ordered to evacuate on Monday, are struggling to find shelter in the overcrowded western parts of the city. The airstrike also targeted an area housing a school-turned-shelter for displaced individuals living in makeshift tents.

Jalal Lafi, displaced from Rafah, described the suddenness of the attack: "We were sitting in this tent, three people, and we were surprised by the rubble and dust." He added that the house was bombed without warning, hit by two consecutive missiles.

Humanitarian Crisis

Andrea De Domenico from the UN humanitarian office for Palestinian territories stated that Gaza is unique in its lack of safe refuge. "Even in so-called safe areas there are bombings," he said during a press briefing in Jerusalem on Wednesday.

The latest evacuation order affected around 250,000 people earlier this week across various parts of Gaza, as estimated by the United Nations. Most Palestinians are heading towards Muwasi and Deir al-Balah, areas with sprawling tent camps but limited basic services.

Challenges in Aid Delivery

De Domenico highlighted the difficulty of delivering food to these areas. The Israeli military estimates that approximately 1.9 million people are now concentrated in central Gaza. Restrictions and ongoing conflict have severely hampered humanitarian aid efforts.

An Israeli airstrike on Tuesday killed a prominent Palestinian doctor and eight members of his extended family shortly after they moved to the designated safe zone following military orders to evacuate their home.

Witness Accounts

As dust from Wednesday's bombing filled the street near Nasser Hospital, an Associated Press contributor captured footage of people running in all directions. Men were seen carrying two young boys who appeared injured. Civil defence first responders and bystanders later searched through debris for survivors.

"It's an unendurable life," said Anwar Salman, a displaced Palestinian. "If they want to kill us, let them do it. Let them drop a nuclear bomb and finish us. We are fed up. We are tired. We are dying every day."

The ongoing fighting and breakdown of law and order have led to widespread hunger and fears of famine among the population. Humanitarian aid efforts have been severely restricted due to these conditions.

The situation remains dire as displaced families continue to seek shelter and basic necessities amidst ongoing conflict and airstrikes.
