Thousands of Gazans Flee Homes as Israeli Ground Offensive Looms
Thousands of Gazans have fled their homes in the northern part of the territory as Israeli forces prepare for a ground offensive.
In the wake of relentless Israeli airstrikes and warnings of a ground offensive, hundreds of thousands of Gazans have been forced to flee their homes in a mass exodus that aid workers have called catastrophic. The scale of the evacuation order is vast, covering an area of 1.1 million residents, or about half the territory's population.
Fleeing for Safety

Some fled their homes with suitcases packed with clothes, heirlooms, and photographs, while others left with stacks of foam mattresses tied to car roofs. They took buses, vans, cars, and carts pulled by donkeys, and many walked, trudging through streets littered with rubble. Their destination: safety.
Evacuation Order
The Israeli leaflets that warned civilians to flee the north within 24 hours fueled fear and chaos in Gaza. The leaflets stated that Israeli forces would operate significantly in northern Gaza in the coming days, an apparent reference to an expected land offensive being prepared one week after Hamas's bloody and carefully planned attack on Israel.
No Safe Place
Despite the evacuation order, many Gazans chose to stay and face the looming invasion. Some said there was simply no safe place to go in the south, which was far from their friends and relatives. Others feared the dangers on the roads that Israel said could be used as evacuation routes but had been targeted several times by Israeli airstrikes.
Seeking Shelter
Some Gazans sought shelter in places they hoped would not be Israeli targets. Medical officials say an estimated 35,000 people have crammed into the grounds of Gaza City's main hospital, hoping for refuge. The social media was flooded with calls for help, with people desperately searching for transportation to escape the conflict zone.
Repeating History
For many Gazans, the evacuation order brought back painful memories of the 1948 Nakba, or catastrophe, when hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were displaced from their homes during the founding of Israel. The fear that they may not be allowed to return to their homes again is palpable among the people.
Loss and Trauma
The mass exodus has caused immense loss and trauma for the people of Gaza. Many families had to leave their homes, memories, and dreams behind. The destruction of homes and infrastructure has left them feeling anguished, humiliated, and abandoned.
The mass exodus in Gaza is a humanitarian crisis unfolding before our eyes. The scale of the displacement and the suffering of the people are immense. The international community must take immediate action to protect civilians and ensure their safe passage. The people of Gaza deserve to live in peace and dignity, free from the threat of violence and displacement.
