Game-Changer: England To Roll Out World's First Seven-Minute Cancer Treatment Injection
The United Kingdom's publicly funded national healthcare system is poised to take the lead globally by introducing an injectable treatment for hundreds of cancer patients in England. This groundbreaking treatment holds the potential to not only combat the disease but also slash treatment durations by as much as three-quarters, according to a report from Reuters news agency.
Following approval from the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), NHS England announced that eligible patients would receive an "under the skin" injection of the immunotherapy atezolizumab, also known as Tecentriq, on Tuesday.

Atezolizumab, developed by Genentech, a Roche (ROG.S) company, is an immunotherapy drug that empowers a patient's immune system to identify and eliminate cancerous cells. The treatment is currently accessible to NHS patients grappling with a variety of cancers, encompassing lung, breast, liver, and bladder cancers.
Traditionally, atezolizumab has been administered intravenously via a drip, a process that often consumed around 30 to 60 minutes, especially for patients with challenging vein access. However, this new approach drastically reduces administration time. Marius Scholtz, Medical Director at Roche Products Limited, affirmed that the novel injection method takes a mere seven minutes, considerably shorter than the intravenous infusion method.
Dr. Alexander Martin, a consultant oncologist at West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust, highlighted the significance of this approval, noting that it not only provides more efficient care for patients but also facilitates the treatment of a larger number of patients within a day.
NHS England anticipates that the majority of the approximately 3,600 patients initiating atezolizumab treatment each year in England will transition to the time-saving injection. However, patients receiving intravenous chemotherapy in conjunction with atezolizumab might continue with the infusion method.
