Former Netanyahu Cabinet Member Apologizes for Role in Israels Internal Strife
Galit Distel Atbaryan, a member of Netanyahus Likud Party, apologized for her role in the internal divisions that preceded the Hamas attack in October, acknowledging that these divisions may have contributed to Hamas perception of weakness.
In a rare public apology, Galit Distel Atbaryan, a former member of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Cabinet, has taken responsibility for contributing to the internal strife in Israel that preceded the October 7 attack by Hamas militants from the Gaza Strip. The mea culpa marks one of the first instances where a Likud Party member has acknowledged their role in the polarized atmosphere leading up to the devastating war that has持续了近三个月.

Accepting Responsibility for Internal Divisions
Distel Atbaryan appeared on Channel 13 TV to express her remorse and accept the argument that internal divisions created perceptions of weakness, emboldening Hamas to launch the attack. She candidly admitted her mistakes and apologized for causing pain, fear, and a sense of vulnerability among the democratic and secular public.
Role in Mass Protests and Civil Discord
Distel Atbaryan acknowledged her part in the massive protests and civil discord that erupted after Netanyahu's right-wing government attempted to implement a sweeping overhaul of the judicial system. The crisis sparked mass demonstrations, alarmed business leaders and former security chiefs, and drew international concern from the United States and other close allies.
Mea Culpa for Weakening the State
With a sense of contrition, Distel Atbaryan admitted her role in weakening the state and causing harm to people. She recognized that her actions contributed to divisions, rifts, and tensions that ultimately led to a state of weakness. This weakness, she asserted, played a significant role in the subsequent massacre.
Resignation and Continued Role in Parliament
Distel Atbaryan, who previously served as the public diplomacy minister, was a staunch supporter of Netanyahu and gained attention for her harsh criticism of his opponents. However, days after the October 7 attack, she resigned from her position when it became apparent that other government ministries were handling her responsibilities. Despite her resignation, she remains a member of parliament in the Likud Party.
Galit Distel Atbaryan's public apology sheds light on the internal dynamics within Israel that may have contributed to the Hamas attack and the ensuing war. Her willingness to accept responsibility for her actions stands as a rare occurrence within the Likud Party and highlights the ongoing challenges in addressing internal divisions and fostering unity in the face of external threats.
