Maritime security: Modi urges safe sea lanes at G7 after Gulf of Oman deaths

Narendra Modi said unrest near the Strait of Hormuz damaged the world economy. Narendra Modi added that many Indian citizens lost their lives. The comments came as anger grew in India after the deaths. Narendra Modi raised the issue before planned bilateral talks with US President Donald Trump.

G7 summit: Narendra Modi on Strait of Hormuz and seafarers

Narendra Modi referred to the wider conflict in West Asia during the session. The session was called Forging New Partnerships and Rebuilding International Solidarity. Narendra Modi said: "We welcome the progress made in peace efforts in West Asia. This conflict has caused loss of life and property in our friendly countries in the region,\". Narendra Modi linked peace efforts to safer trade routes.

Narendra Modi said: \"It is our responsibility to ensure the safety of the seafarers who connect all nations through global maritime trade. We must ensure that maritime routes remain secure and that seafarers can perform their duties without fear,\". Narendra Modi said the Strait of Hormuz disruptions affected global commerce. Narendra Modi framed safe shipping as a shared duty.

US Central Command: Strait of Hormuz vessel actions

The US Central Command said it acted against three vessels in June. It said the aim was to disable the ships. The vessels were Marivex on June 8, Settebello on June 9 and Jalveer on June 11. The command said the ships tried to break a US blockade of Iranian ports.

G7 summit: Narendra Modi on trust and Global South partnerships

Narendra Modi also spoke about wider geopolitical changes. Narendra Modi said nations needed stronger trust. Narendra Modi argued that minerals, technology and markets mattered less than mutual trust. Narendra Modi said interdependence now shaped energy, food, health and cyber security. Narendra Modi said prosperity was not decided only within borders.

Narendra Modi said: \"Todays world is more interconnected and interdependent than ever before. A nations energy, food, health, and cyber security, as well as its economic prosperity, are not determined solely within its own borders. Mobility, data, capital, and technology all connect us,\". Narendra Modi said partnerships grew in such conditions. Narendra Modi said trust must sit at their core.

Narendra Modi described what trust should cover in global systems. Narendra Modi said: \"The trust that technology and supply chains will be used for the global good, rather than as weapons. The trust that development opportunities will not be limited to just a few countries. The trust that global institutions will be capable of fulfilling the aspirations of all nations,\". Narendra Modi tied these goals to fairer cooperation.

Narendra Modi highlighted concerns raised by the Global South. Narendra Modi said: \"Today, the Global South has high expectations of the global community. However, what they seek is not merely support, but partnership. They aspire to be partners in global development, not just beneficiaries,\". Narendra Modi said countries wanted equal roles in development efforts.

Narendra Modi said: \"We must move beyond the donor-recipient mindset and work as equal partners. We should walk together, side by side. Partnership must be rooted in dignity, not dependency.\". Narendra Modi added: \"Through these efforts, we will lay a strong foundation for sustainable development for future generations,\". Narendra Modi presented the approach as a practical step for long-term goals.
