"I warmly recall my visit to Italy for the G20 Summit in 2021. Prime Minister Meloni's two visits to India last year were instrumental in infusing momentum and depth into our bilateral agenda. We remain committed to consolidating the India-Italy strategic partnership and bolstering cooperation in the Indo-Pacific and the Mediterranean regions," a statement was made by Prime Minister Modi.
In her opening address, it was stated by Meloni that southern Italy had been chosen as the venue to deliver a strong message to the global South. "It is no coincidence that the summit is being hosted in Apulia. This decision was made because Apulia is a region of southern Italy, and the message that the G7, under the Italian presidency, wishes to convey is the intention to strengthen dialogue with the nations of the Global South," her statement said.
Throughout the day, a series of meetings were held by Modi, marking his first overseas trip in his third term. The leaders with whom discussions were engaged included US President Joe Biden, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni, Pope Francis, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, King Abdullah II of Jordan, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres.
