G-7 Leaders: Iran's Attack On Israel Risks Regional Escalation; UNSC To Meet
In a significant development that has drawn global attention, the G-7 leaders have issued a stern condemnation of Iran's direct attack on Israel, marking a notable escalation in regional tensions. This event, described as both direct and without precedent, prompted an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council in New York to address the crisis.

The G-7's statement came after a coordinated response to the assault, which saw the United States aiding Israel in neutralizing a barrage of drones and missiles launched by Iran. This military action represents Iran's first direct offensive against Israel, with Israeli officials reporting a successful interception rate of 99 percent of the incoming weapons, thereby averting significant damage.
"With its actions, Iran has further stepped toward the destabilisation of the region and risks provoking an uncontrollable regional escalation. This must be avoided. We will continue to work to stabilise the situation and avoid further escalation," the G-7 leaders articulated in a unified stance following discussions initiated by President Joe Biden.
The G-7, comprising the US, Italy, Japan, Germany, France, Britain, and Canada, not only condemned Iran's actions but also expressed unwavering solidarity and support for Israel. The group reaffirmed its commitment to Israel's security and outlined intentions to bolster cooperation aimed at resolving the crisis in Gaza. This includes efforts towards establishing an immediate and sustainable ceasefire and facilitating increased humanitarian assistance for Palestinians in need.
Further diplomatic engagements saw President Biden engaging in discussions with Jordanian King Abdullah II, focusing on the ramifications of Iran's assault on Israel. Additionally, Biden commended members of the 494th and 335th Fighter Squadrons for their pivotal role in defending Israel against this unprecedented aerial attack.
The emergency meeting at the United Nations headquarters was requested by Israel under the agenda item "The situation in the Middle East," with Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expected to provide a briefing. Israel's request emphasized the attack as a clear violation of the UN Charter and international law, urging the Council to condemn Iran unequivocally and consider designating the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organisation.
Iran, on its part, defended its actions in a letter to the president of the Security Council and the Secretary-General, claiming the operation was an exercise of its right to self-defence under Article 51 of the UN Charter. The letter justified the military action as retaliation for an April 1 attack by Israel against an Iranian facility in Damascus, which resulted in casualties among senior IRGC commanders.
This incident has not only heightened tensions between Iran and Israel but also underscored the fragile stability of regional security dynamics. The international community watches closely as diplomatic efforts unfold to address this critical juncture in Middle Eastern politics.
