From Truman to Trump: How the US-Israel Bond Is Reshaping the Middle East

In a rapidly shifting global landscape, strategic alliances matter more than ever - and few are as enduring and consequential as the bond between the United States and Israel. This partnership is rooted in a complex blend of historical, strategic, and cultural factors, and has shaped the trajectory of the Middle East for decades. The alliance is especially visible in the context of the ongoing tensions and confrontations with Iran, as recent statements by US President Donald Trump on support to Israel suggest.

Historical Foundations of US-Israel Ties

The US-Israel relationship began even before Israel's formal establishment in 1948. President Harry S. Truman was among the first world leaders to recognise the new Jewish state, driven by both humanitarian sympathy for Holocaust survivors and strategic calculations in a rapidly changing post-World War II world. Since then, every US administration, regardless of party, has maintained strong support for Israel, seeing it as a democratic outpost and a reliable ally in a volatile region.

During the Cold War, Israel became a crucial American partner in countering Soviet influence in the Middle East. The US provided military, economic, and diplomatic support and Israel, in turn, offered intelligence cooperation and a strategic foothold for American interests. The US-Israel Free Trade Agreement of 1985 and the designation of Israel as a 'major non-NATO ally' in 1989 further cemented this partnership, granting Israel access to advanced US military technology and defense contracts.

Strategic and Military Cooperation

US military aid to Israel has been substantial and sustained. In 1999, the US committed to providing Israel with at least $2.7 billion in military aid annually for a decade; this figure was raised to $3 billion in 2009 and to $3.8 billion in 2019. Israel is the largest cumulative recipient of US foreign aid, having received over $150 billion as of early 2022. This support has enabled Israel to develop one of the world's most advanced militaries and to deter threats from hostile neighbors, including Iran.

The US has also provided large-scale political support, frequently using its veto power in the UN Security Council to block resolutions critical of Israel. The US is the only permanent member of the Security Council to have recognised the Golan Heights as Israeli territory and Jerusalem as Israel's capital, moving its embassy there in 2018.

The War Against Iran and US Stance

In recent years, Iran has emerged as a primary adversary for both Israel and the United States. US support for Israel is seen as essential in countering Iranian influence and preventing the spread of nuclear weapons in the region. The US and Israel share intelligence on Iranian activities and coordinate on military strategy, including joint efforts to disrupt Iran's nuclear program and its support for militant groups across the Middle East.

Recent Israeli strikes against Iran have heightened tensions and raised the specter of a wider regional conflict. The US has generally supported Israel's right to defend itself, even as it seeks to avoid direct military entanglement. For example, following a recent series of Israeli strikes on Iran, US officials emphasised that the US was not involved in the attacks but would protect its own interests and forces in the region.

Trump's Warning to Iran

President Trump's recent statements against Iran shows the gravity of the situation. In a message on Truth Social, Trump warned Iran that time is running out for diplomacy:

"I told them it would be much worse than anything they know, anticipated, or were told, that the United States makes the best and most lethal military equipment anywhere in the World, BY FAR, and that Israel has a lot of it, with much more to come - And they know how to use it... There has already been great death and destruction, but there is still time to make this slaughter, with the next already planned attacks being even more brutal, come to an end. Iran must make a deal, before there is nothing left, and save what was once known as the Iranian Empire. No more death, no more destruction, JUST DO IT, BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE."

His warning suggests that further military action is possible if Iran does not relent, highlighting the high stakes for regional stability and the potential for broader conflict.

The Bottom Line

The US-Israel alliance is a cornerstone of American foreign policy in the Middle East, shaped by shared values, strategic interests and a long history of cooperation. The ongoing confrontation with Iran has only reinforced this partnership, as both countries seek to prevent Iranian aggression and maintain regional stability.
