From Gentleman Cadet To Sri Lanka Army Chief: Lt Gen. Rodrigo's Emotional Homecoming To IMA

Returning to his alma mater after more than three decades, Lieutenant General BKGM Lasantha Rodrigo, Commander of the Sri Lanka Army, had an emotional homecoming at the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun, where he was originally commissioned as an officer in December 1990.

His return as the Reviewing Officer for the Passing Out Parade (POP) marked not only a significant personal journey but also emphasised the deep institutional bonds between the armed forces of India and Sri Lanka.
Lieutenant General Rodrigo, commissioned into the Sri Lanka Army as part of IMA's 87th Course, reviewed the parade where young officer cadets, including two from his own country, were commissioned.

Among them was RMNL Rathnayake, the son of Brigadier RMSP Rathnayake, reflecting how military traditions and values cultivated at IMA run deeply through generations of Sri Lankan Army families.
In his deeply reflective address, Lt Gen. Rodrigo spoke candidly of the pride and honour he felt returning to the institution that had significantly shaped his own career and leadership philosophy.

He emphasised to the gentlemen cadets that their commissioning represented far more than sheer rank-it represented their entry into a lifelong journey defined by discipline, service, responsibility, and honour.
Respect is earned through daily conduct, Lt Gen. Rodrigo reminded them, reinforcing the core values instilled by IMA: discipline, integrity, loyalty, and honour. He quoted the legendary Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, invoking his memorable advice to future leaders: "Be truthful, be honest, be fearless."

The ceremony at IMA was not just a formal military event; it was emblematic of the close ties and deep mutual respect between India and Sri Lanka cultivated over decades of collaborative training and defence cooperation. The presence of the Commander of the Sri Lanka Army added greater resonance, demonstrating how personal and institutional histories intertwine through military diplomacy.

During his four-day visit to India from June 11-14, Lt Gen. Rodrigo also held strategic discussions with senior Indian Army leadership, including Vice Chief of Army Staff (VCOAS) Lt Gen. NS Raja Subramani and General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C), South Western Command, Lt Gen. Manjinder Singh. The high-level interactions focused on strengthening professional military cooperation, joint training opportunities, and regional security frameworks-highlighting the strategic dimension of the Sri Lanka Army Chief's visit.

India remains a critical training ground for the Sri Lankan Army, with approximately 700 Sri Lankan military personnel undergoing training annually at India's premier defence institutions, including the Defence Services Staff College, Infantry School, Counter-Insurgency and Jungle Warfare School, Army Air Defence College, School of Artillery, and Mechanised Infantry Centre and School. Such training initiatives have been central to the strong interpersonal and institutional bonds developed over the years between the two forces.

The bilateral military exercise "Mitra Shakti," last held in Sri Lanka in August 2024, further exemplifies the operational synergy and trust fostered through sustained defence cooperation. The Sri Lanka Army Chief's visit continues this tradition of high-level military exchanges, reaffirming the strategic commitment shared by the two nations.

Lt Gen. Rodrigo's journey from a young officer cadet at IMA to the top command position in his nation's army powerfully illustrates the enduring legacy of India's premier military training institution. His emotional return spotlighted how deeply IMA's ethos and principles resonate across borders, strengthening not only military capability but also the foundational ties of friendship and respect between neighbouring nations.
