French Synagogue Arson Suspect Charged, Aims to Impact Israeli Policy

A 33-year-old man has been charged with preliminary terrorism offences following an arson attack on a French synagogue. The suspect, identified by his initials EHK, claimed the attack was in defence of Palestinians and aimed at influencing Israeli policy, according to prosecutors.

Synagogue Attack Aims at Israeli Policy

The incident has heightened concerns about antisemitism in France, especially in the context of the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza. Security measures have been increased at Jewish places of worship across the country. The attack occurred last Saturday at the Beth Yaacov synagogue in La Grande Motte, a Mediterranean resort town.

Details of the Attack

EHK set multiple fires around the synagogue, resulting in injuries to a police officer. He fled the scene but was later apprehended. During his arrest, he sustained injuries to his thorax, arm, and face. The national counterterrorism prosecutor's office provided these details in a statement.

The suspect, an Algerian with French residency, was presented to an investigating judge on Wednesday. He faces preliminary charges including attempted murder, arson motivated by race or religion, and armed violence against police officers. EHK has been ordered to remain in custody while further investigations continue.

Suspect's Motivations

Under questioning, EHK admitted to planning and executing the attack. He stated that his actions were intended to support the Palestinian cause and provoke a reaction from Israeli authorities. He claimed he did not intend to kill anyone but wanted to instil fear.

Prosecutors revealed that EHK had become increasingly radicalised in recent months. His social media activity and statements to acquaintances indicated a growing desire to fight in Gaza. He also expressed long-standing animosity towards Jews, particularly concerning the situation in Palestine.

Preparation for the Attack

In preparation for the attack, EHK purchased a firearm and conducted online searches related to synagogues in the area, Jewish holidays, and Sabbath practices. On the day of the attack, he went alone to the Beth Yaacov synagogue armed with a handgun, several plastic bottles filled with fuel, and an axe inscribed with statements about Palestine, Gaza, and Muslim blood.

French caretaker Prime Minister Gabriel Attal visited La Grande Motte following the incident. He expressed outrage and condemnation of the attack, stating: "Once again, French Jews have been targeted and attacked because of their beliefs."

Two other individuals suspected of assisting EHK have also been charged with lesser offences. The investigation into their involvement is ongoing.

The incident underscores the persistent threat of antisemitism in France and highlights the need for vigilance and enhanced security measures at Jewish institutions nationwide.
