Addressing the Situation in Gaza

Sejourne highlighted the dire conditions faced by the people of Gaza, who have endured relentless bombings and a near-complete siege for four months. He stressed the importance of providing essential aid to treat injuries, prevent epidemics, and ensure adequate food supplies. While acknowledging Israel's right to self-defense following the Hamas-orchestrated attacks, Sejourne expressed deep concern over the tragic loss of life and destruction in the Palestinian territory.

Calling for International Action

Sejourne emphasized the need for all parties to respect international humanitarian law and called for an immediate and lasting ceasefire. He urged a massive influx of humanitarian aid to alleviate the suffering in Gaza. Additionally, Sejourne advocated for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages held by Hamas, including three French nationals.

Efforts for a Ceasefire Deal

Sejourne's visit to Israel coincides with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken's regional tour, which includes stops in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Qatar, Israel, and the West Bank. Blinken aims to make progress towards a potential ceasefire agreement.

France's Role in Mediation

France, along with Qatar, played a crucial role in mediating the first agreement between Israel and Hamas since November. This deal allowed for the delivery of medicines to hostages and Palestinian civilians. Sejourne highlighted France's ongoing efforts, in collaboration with Qatar and regional partners, to ensure the delivery of medicines shipped to Gaza for the hostages.

Discussions on Regional Issues

During his meeting with Netanyahu, Sejourne also discussed matters related to Lebanon, a former French protectorate. The two leaders aimed to address concerns over the militant group Hezbollah's attacks on northern Israel during the recent conflict. Sejourne reaffirmed France's commitment to preventing any escalation of regional hostilities.

Regional Visits

Sejourne's first trip to the Middle East since his appointment included stops in Egypt and Jordan before arriving in Israel. He is scheduled to meet with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah and travel to Lebanon in the coming days.
