Imran Khan Sentenced To 14 Years In Prison For Land Corruption Case In Pakistan
Former Prime Minister Imran Khan of Pakistan has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for a land corruption case. The verdict was delivered by an anti-graft court in Rawalpindi, where Khan has been detained since August 2023. This case is the most significant financial wrongdoing charge he has faced.
Khan, aged 72, and his wife Bushra Bibi were accused of receiving land as a gift from a real estate developer during his tenure from 2018 to 2022. In return, it is alleged that they provided illegal favours. Both had pleaded not guilty to these charges.

Legal Proceedings and Reactions
The announcement of the verdict was postponed three times, with the latest delay occurring on Monday. This happened amid ongoing discussions between the government and Khan's political party. Bushra Bibi, who was on bail, was taken into custody following her conviction.
Khan's political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), expressed their disapproval of the verdict through their foreign media wing. They stated, "Whilst we wait for detailed decision, it's important to note that, the Al Qadir Trust case against Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi lacks any solid foundation and is bound to collapse."
Impact on Political Landscape
This verdict represents a major setback for Khan and PTI since their unexpected success in the 2024 general election. Although their candidates won the most seats as independents, they did not secure enough for a majority government.
Khan has been embroiled in numerous legal battles since being ousted from office in April 2022 through a parliamentary vote of confidence. These cases range from graft and misuse of power to inciting violence against the state.
Security Concerns and Legal Challenges
Despite facing multiple charges, Khan has either been acquitted or had sentences suspended in most cases. However, he remains convicted for inciting supporters to attack military facilities following his arrest on May 9, 2023.
His supporters have organised several violent protests since those incidents in May. Due to security concerns, Khan's trials have been conducted within jail premises.
The recent developments mark a significant chapter in Pakistan's political history as Khan continues to navigate through legal challenges while serving his sentence.
