Former Pakistan PM Imran Khan And Wife Bushra Bibi Cleared in Illegal Marriage Case

A Pakistan court has acquitted former prime minister Imran Khan and wife Bushra Bibi in a case challenging the legality of their marriage. Despite this, Khan remains imprisoned on charges related to inciting riots.

The Islamabad District and Sessions Court dismissed the charges against Khan in the iddat case. This case questioned the legitimacy of his marriage to Bushra Bibi, citing Islamic law requirements. The acquittal reverses the seven-year jail term imposed on them just before February's elections.

Legal Challenges and Acquittals

Khan, aged 71, and Bushra Bibi were previously sentenced to seven years for not observing the mandatory waiting period between her divorce and their marriage. However, Additional District and Sessions Court judge Afzal Majoka announced that "the appeals of both Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi are accepted."

In addition to this case, Khan faced multiple convictions leading up to the February elections. He claims these were politically motivated to hinder his return to power. Some of these convictions have been overturned or suspended on appeal.

Political Implications

Earlier this year, a treason conviction carrying a ten-year sentence was overturned in April. Additionally, a 14-year graft sentence was suspended in June, although the conviction itself still stands. These legal battles have significantly impacted Khan's political career.

Khan's legal troubles began with three convictions just days before the February elections. He argues that these cases were orchestrated to prevent him from regaining power. The recent acquittals mark a significant development in his ongoing legal saga.

Despite these setbacks, Khan continues to face significant legal challenges. His supporters argue that the charges are part of a broader effort to undermine his political influence. The recent court decisions have provided some relief but have not fully resolved his legal issues.

The acquittal in the iddat case is a notable victory for Khan and Bushra Bibi. It highlights ongoing debates about the intersection of politics and law in Pakistan. As Khan remains jailed on other charges, his future in politics remains uncertain.
