Former Mayor Faces Charges for Triple Murder in South Dakota

In a tragic incident that has shaken the small town of Centerville, South Dakota, three individuals were fatally shot, leading to charges against a former law enforcement officer and one-time mayor of the town. Jay Ostrem, 64, faces three counts of first-degree murder, as announced by South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley. Ostrem, who has a significant history in law enforcement spanning over two decades across Wyoming and South Dakota, was detained with a bond set at USD 1 million cash-only. The details surrounding legal representation for Ostrem remain unclear, with attempts to reach him for comment going unanswered.

Ex-Mayor Charged in SD Triple Murder

The victims of this harrowing event have been identified as two brothers, aged 26 and 21, along with a 35-year-old man. The connection between the third victim and the brothers was not detailed in the reports. This incident has not only brought to light Ostrem's past roles within the community, including his tenure as Centerville's mayor approximately fifteen years ago but also raised questions about the circumstances leading to such a devastating outcome.

According to a probable cause affidavit, the sequence of events began to unfold when police received a distressing call at 9:44 p.m. on Monday from an individual reporting that his brother had been shot by "a guy from across the street," who then returned to his own home. The situation took a darker turn as the caller himself was shot during the call, subsequently ceasing communication.

Law enforcement's response led to Ostrem's arrest shortly after the call. At the time of his arrest, Ostrem was found with an AR-style rifle near him and a handgun in his pocket. Further investigation at the caller's home revealed the grim discovery of all three victims.

The affidavit also sheds light on a possible motive behind the shootings. It states that Ostrem's wife reported being sexually assaulted by a neighbor named Paul on Thursday prior to the incident. She disclosed this to Ostrem on Monday night, which allegedly led to him "raging out of the house."

Centerville, located roughly 40 miles (64 kilometers) south of Sioux Falls, now mourns the loss of three of its residents in an event that has left the community in shock and seeking answers to this senseless violence.
