Florida Authorities Charge Ryan Wesley Routh in Trump Assassination Attempt and Related Car Crash
Florida authorities are advancing a criminal case against Ryan Wesley Routh, accused of attempting to assassinate President-elect Donald Trump. The charges relate to a car crash following a police operation to apprehend him. Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody has secured an arrest warrant for Routh, who is already detained on federal charges linked to the assassination attempt.

Moody is charging Routh with attempted felony murder due to a crash that severely injured a 6-year-old girl. The incident occurred after officials halted traffic on Interstate 95 during Routh's arrest. Although the crash happened 30 minutes post-arrest, Moody attributes it to Routh's actions.
Attempted Assassination and Legal Proceedings
Routh faces federal charges for attempting to assassinate a major presidential candidate and related gun crimes. He has entered a not guilty plea. Prosecutors allege that Routh meticulously planned Trump's assassination for weeks, aiming a rifle at Trump while he played golf at his West Palm Beach club on September 15.
A Secret Service agent spotted Routh before Trump appeared, prompting Routh to aim his weapon at the agent. The agent fired, causing Routh to drop his rifle and flee without shooting. This arrest followed an earlier incident where Trump was shot and wounded in Pennsylvania during a campaign rally.
State and Federal Investigations
The Secret Service admitted to lapses before the Pennsylvania shooting but stated that security measures effectively prevented the Florida attack. Following the Florida incident, Governor Ron DeSantis announced a state investigation alongside the federal probe, aiming for the most severe charges under state law.
It's common for state and federal agencies to conduct parallel investigations into crimes. This approach allows each jurisdiction to pursue charges that might not be available at the other level. In this case, both state and federal authorities are working together to ensure justice is served.
Routh's attorney has chosen not to comment on the situation through a representative. Meanwhile, the young girl involved in the crash continues to recover from her serious injuries. Moody emphasised that these injuries, combined with Routh's alleged criminal activities, elevate his actions to attempted felony murder.
