Florida State Representative Indicted on Forgery Charges Linked to Private School
A Republican state representative from central Florida, Carolina Amesty, has been indicted on felony forgery charges. The charges relate to her role in administering a private Christian school run by her family. Amesty, 29, surrendered to authorities at the Orange County Jail on Thursday and was booked on four felony counts.

The alleged forgery occurred in 2021 when Amesty was an administrator at Central Christian Academy. According to State Attorney Andrew Bain, she forged a man's signature on a document she notarised. This incident took place before Amesty was elected to the Florida House of Representatives.
Indictment Details
Each charge against Amesty is a third-degree felony, carrying potential penalties of up to five years in prison and $5,000 in fines. The indictment follows investigations by the Orlando Sentinel into Amesty's background, financial practices, and her role in the family-run school.
Amesty is currently running for re-election in her district west of Orlando. She declined to answer questions from The Associated Press but referred to a statement posted on social media platform X. "This prosecution, initiated just a few weeks prior to absentee ballots being dropped, is based on misleading reports from a partisan newspaper about a notarisation of an employee verification background report," reads the statement from Amesty's campaign.
Political Reactions
Following the indictment, the Florida Democratic Party demanded Amesty's resignation. Party Chair Nikki Fried stated, "Carolina Amesty can't effectively represent the people of House District 45 while defending herself from felony charges. She should resign from office immediately, and if she refuses to take responsibility for her actions, we demand that the Florida House of Representatives expel her from membership."
A spokesperson for the Florida Speaker of the House did not respond to requests for comment by the deadline.
Amesty's Background
First elected to the Florida House in 2022, Amesty has portrayed herself as a successful businesswoman and a strong supporter of former President Donald Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. She won a competitive district that includes parts of Orange and Osceola counties, encompassing Walt Disney World.
Amesty's campaign statement also mentioned that she is calling for a speedy trial and looks forward to her day in court. "Rep. Amesty calls for a speedy trial, looks forward to her day in court, and is confident of her public vindication," it read.
The case against Amesty has drawn significant attention due to its timing and potential impact on her political career. The charges come just weeks before absentee ballots are set to be distributed for the upcoming election.
The unfolding legal battle will likely have implications for both Amesty's re-election campaign and her ability to serve effectively if re-elected.
