Flood In Pakistan's Punjab: 30 Dead, Many Missing; Govt's Declares 'Rain Emergency'

Monsoon rains have wreaked havoc in Pakistan's Punjab province, resulting in 30 fatalities in a single day. This brings the total number of deaths from rain-related incidents to 170 since June 26. The provincial government has declared a "rain emergency" across several districts due to the severe weather conditions.

Chakwal district, situated approximately 300 km from Lahore, experienced the highest rainfall in the province with 423 mm recorded within 24 hours. This deluge has led to flash floods, prompting rescue operations by teams supported by the military and local authorities. Efforts are underway to evacuate those stranded in flooded areas.

The heavy rains have caused significant damage, with over 125 houses affected. Additionally, at least 300 individuals have sustained injuries due to rain-related accidents across the province. The most severely impacted cities include Lahore, Faisalabad, Okara, Sahiwal, Pakpattan, and Chakwal.

Authorities have issued warnings about potential flooding in rivers and streams as forecasts predict continued rainfall. All relevant departments such as district administrations, police, and emergency services are on high alert to respond swiftly to any emergencies that may arise.

Healthcare Preparedness Amidst Crisis

The government has directed hospitals throughout Punjab, including field hospitals, to remain fully equipped and ready for emergencies. This measure is crucial as the region braces for ongoing adverse weather conditions that could exacerbate the current situation.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) is actively coordinating rescue efforts and monitoring the situation closely. Their reports highlight the extensive damage and casualties caused by this relentless monsoon season.
