Flights Temporarily Suspended at Halifax Airport Following Incident During Landing

A plane incident at Halifax Stanfield International Airport is under investigation by the Transportation Safety Board of Canada. A passenger, Nikki Valentine, described the landing as rough, with sparks and flames visible. Valentine, who was on the PAL Airlines flight, recounted feeling a "massive rumble" when the plane landed on Saturday night.

Halifax Airport Flights Suspended After Incident

Airport spokesperson Tiffany Chase reported that an Air Canada Express flight, operated by PAL Airlines from St. John's, Newfoundland, encountered an issue upon landing around 9:30 pm. Air Canada spokesperson Peter Fitzpatrick stated that the Bombardier Q400 aircraft had a "suspected landing gear issue" and could not reach the terminal.

Passenger Experiences and Reactions

Valentine mentioned that after the cabin tilted, sparks and flames were seen, followed by smoke entering the cabin. She expressed gratitude for the pilot's quick response, saying she is "especially thankful the pilot was able to get a hold of the situation very fast." Fortunately, all 73 passengers and crew were safely evacuated by bus without injuries.

The incident led to a temporary suspension of flight operations at the airport. As of Sunday afternoon, Valentine and other passengers had not received their luggage left on the plane. Valentine contacted Air Canada and was informed it might take up to three days for their bags to be returned due to the ongoing investigation.

Impact on Passengers

Valentine noted that many passengers had essential items like house keys or wallets in their luggage. She acknowledged the inconvenience but understood it was part of proper procedure. "It's all proper procedure, and I'd rather the inconvenience of missing bags than if anything bad had happened, of course, but it's still tough," she remarked.

The investigation continues as authorities work to determine the cause of the suspected landing gear issue. Meanwhile, passengers await further updates regarding their belongings and any potential compensation for their inconvenience.
