Tragic Fire at Porto Alegre Hotel Results in Multiple Fatalities and Injuries

A devastating fire swept through a modest hotel in Porto Alegre, southern Brazil, early Friday morning, resulting in the tragic loss of at least 10 lives and leaving 11 individuals injured, according to official reports. The incident unfolded in the early hours within a three-story building known for offering affordable accommodation in single rooms. This establishment also had an agreement with the municipal government to provide shelter for homeless individuals.

Deadly Hotel Fire in Porto Alegre

The hotel, identified as Garoa Floresta, is part of the Garoa group, which operates 22 other small hotels across Porto Alegre. Unfortunately, this establishment was found to be operating without the necessary licensing and lacked an emergency fire plan, as stated by the Rio Grande do Sul state fire brigade. This revelation comes in the wake of a similar incident in 2022 at another hotel within the same group, which resulted in one fatality and 11 injuries.

Marcelo Wagner Schelech, a 56-year-old survivor, recounted his harrowing escape to the local daily newspaper Zero Hora. He described how he fled his room around 2 am, narrowly escaping through smoke and flames. Tragically, his sister, who resided on the third floor, did not survive.

In response to this tragedy, Porto Alegre Mayor Sebastião Melo announced during a press conference that an investigation into the contract signed in 2020 with the Garoa group for the use of 400 rooms to shelter homeless people will be initiated. Furthermore, inspections will be conducted across all 22 units operated by the chain, which are all providers of social housing. At the time of the fire, the city hall had contracts for 16 rooms at the hotel.

Of the 11 individuals rescued from the blaze, eight remain hospitalized, with two in serious condition but not facing life-threatening injuries. Among those who sought medical attention were two homeless persons. Authorities have assured that all victims will now be provided shelter elsewhere.

This tragic event has cast a spotlight on the importance of stringent safety measures and proper licensing for accommodation facilities, especially those serving vulnerable populations. The local government's immediate response underscores a commitment to ensuring such a disaster does not occur again.
