Finland Minister Backs India Buying Russian Oil, Says Imports Under The Price Cap

A high-level dialogue on global energy security took place during the Kultaranta Talks in Finland. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar participated alongside host foreign minister Elina Valtonen. United Arab Emirates Assistant Foreign Minister Lana Nusseibeh joined them on the regional panel.

Finland unexpectedly offered strong support to India during this debate about purchases from Moscow. The Finnish foreign minister explained that New Delhi followed the established trade rules. These guidelines were created by Western powers after the conflict in Ukraine started.

Finland Supports India Over Russian Oil Imports

Valtonen argued that the restriction system was not created to block commercial acquisitions completely. The strategy was aimed at managing global oil flows while restricting profits for Moscow. Valtonen said, "In India's defence, it has bought oil under the price cap. That was the intention,"

The Finnish minister explained that the West did not intend to disrupt trade networks. Valtonen said, "When we introduced the oil price cap, we did not prohibit the world from buying Russian oil. The entire idea was not to disrupt the oil market but to make sure oil continued to be supplied while Russia did not make massive margins from it."

The global trade market shifted heavily when sanctions were imposed on Moscow in 2022. Western policies restricted traditional supplies, forcing other nations to seek alternative partners. These sudden changes severely impacted import pathways for energy-consuming countries like India.

The external affairs minister recalled how European nations quickly redirected their supply routes. S Jaishankar explained, "At that point of time, much of the oil available in the market was from Russia because Europeans were buying up the Middle East oil, which was our traditional supplier. Circumstances pushed us in a certain direction,"

Jaishankar Explains Strategy On Russian Oil Purchases

Meanwhile, S Jaishankar rejected global criticism during the regional security discussions in Finland. S Jaishankar strongly defended the energy procurement choices made by the Indian government. The decisions were described as realistic and necessary for national domestic security.

S Jaishankar noted that political alliances do not dictate the acquisition of energy supplies. Decisions depend on financial sense and the availability of resources. S Jaishankar stated, "I buy oil based on cost and availability,"

S Jaishankar also pointed out that Western powers acted inconsistently regarding their trade rules. This was clear when Washington requested help from New Delhi during the crisis. The request was aimed at preventing a complete collapse of global supplies.

The external affairs minister highlighted this historical detail during the panel. S Jaishankar stated, "At that time, the US specifically asked India to buy Russian oil to stabilise the oil market," S Jaishankar also noted, "Let's not pretend some great principle is involved here."

Jaishankar Rejects Criticism Of India's Russian Oil Purchases

S Jaishankar delivered a direct and sharp response to criticisms regarding the Ukraine conflict. S Jaishankar addressed the hypocrisy of certain governments that question New Delhi's energy policies. This confrontation marked a significant moment during the recent panel debate.

The external affairs minister highlighted the arms trade history of European nations. S Jaishankar pointed out, "European countries sell weapons that have been used to attack India for many years. We Indians have never done anything to endanger Europe. So keep that in mind,"

These comments targeted the biased complaints that New Delhi frequently faces from Europe. Selective disapproval has often been directed at India's independent diplomatic choices. The minister remains firm on protecting the national economic interests of Indian citizens.

S Jaishankar also contradicted assumptions about the shifting focus away from West Asia. The external affairs minister explained how India's importing patterns have transformed. Diversification remains a key priority for the national power sector.

The minister explained the current balance of resources. S Jaishankar stated, "Our largest oil supplier is Russia. Our largest gas supplier is the US and this was not the case till February 28 this year. It was Qatar. Our relationship with the Gulf is not only related to oil,"

The latest numbers show major alterations in global supplies since the Ukraine conflict. New Delhi continues working hard to develop new ties while keeping traditional partnerships. This approach ensures India keeps strong connections with several global powers.

The supportive statements from Valtonen will help reinforce India's stance.
