The upcoming tournament, jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, is expected to draw tens of thousands of supporters from around the globe. With ticket sales already underway, American authorities are preparing for a sharp rise in visa demand, particularly from travelers coming from countries that are not part of the US Visa Waiver Programme.

Extra Staff Deployment Ahead of World Cup

Although the exact list of countries and number of staff assignments has yet to be finalized, pending confirmation of the 48-team tournament line-up, the department stated that "hundreds of staff" will be sent to designated countries in the coming months. These officers will focus on processing increased volumes of visa interviews.

The State Department emphasized that it is ready to meet the surge in applications while continuing to enforce rigorous vetting standards. Travelers from non-Visa Waiver nations, or those without a valid US tourist or business visa, must apply for a visa, which includes an in-person interview and extensive security screening.

Visa Processing Times Improve Globally

Visa processing delays, a concern in recent years, have eased significantly. The State Department reported that in about 80% of countries that have either qualified or could qualify for the World Cup, visa interview appointments can generally be scheduled within two months or less.

Some supporters remain concerned about stricter immigration measures introduced during the Trump administration, which expanded vetting to include checks on social media activity and public statements.
