Deadly Synthetic Opioid Fentanyl Kills One-Year-Old in Mexico

A one-year-old child has died and a four-year-old has recovered after being exposed to the deadly synthetic opioid fentanyl in the drug-plagued northern Mexico state of Sinaloa.

In a tragic incident in the drug-afflicted northern Mexico state of Sinaloa, a one-year-old child lost his life after being exposed to the lethal synthetic opioid fentanyl, while a four-year-old survived such exposure. The news came out on Monday, as per authorities. This year alone has seen four children treated for contact with fentanyl in Sinaloa, notorious for its drug trafficking activities and home to the infamous cartel sharing its name.

Fentanyl

Despite these alarming incidents, Governor Ruben Rocha tried to minimize their significance at a press conference held on Monday. He pointed out that only one child had died so far while the other three had not succumbed. At one point during his address, he even denied the presence of fentanyl in his state despite it being known as a major producer.

Possible Exposure Sources

Governor Rocha speculated that the children might have come into contact with an addict or someone working at an illicit fentanyl pill-pressing workshop. Such workshops are quite prevalent in Sinaloa where they convert fentanyl powder into counterfeit pills resembling common medications like Oxycontin, Valium and Xanax.

Fatal Consequences Across Borders

Unaware ingestion of these fake pills has caused numerous deaths in America though addiction to fentanyl remains relatively uncommon in Mexico since most of these pills are meant for exportation. Despite this grim reality, Rocha insisted that Fentanyl is prohibited from entering Sinaloa State.

Mexican Cartels' Role

Experts unanimously agree that Mexican cartels import precursor chemicals from China which they then process into Fentanyl before shipping them off as pills to America. While denying any existence of drug "laboratories" within his state's borders, Rocha acknowledged the presence of drug "workshops". He appeared to be quite impressed with the traffickers' meticulousness in mixing various ingredients.

Efforts To Change Perception

Rocha, a member of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador's Morena party, has been trying to change Sinaloa's notorious image. Despite being an agricultural powerhouse, experts confirm that its primary income source is still the drug trade and related illicit businesses.

Recent Exposure Incidents

Sinaloa state Health Secretary Cuitláhuac González revealed that these children were likely exposed to fentanyl during two separate incidents last week. The four-year-old child is expected to be discharged from hospital soon. He also dismissed the possibility of children consuming drug-laced candy which is a popular belief in Mexico.

Fatalities In The United States

In America alone, approximately 70,000 adults die annually due to fentanyl overdoses. Even minimal exposure can prove fatal for small children as evidenced by a recent case where a child died at a New York City childcare center after coming into contact with fentanyl. Several arrests have been made relating to this incident.

This tragic situation highlights the widespread danger posed by synthetic opioids like Fentanyl not just within Mexico but across international borders too. It also underscores the urgent need for stringent measures aimed at curbing drug trafficking and ensuring public safety especially among vulnerable populations such as young children.
