Four Killed in Southern California After DUI Suspect Flees Law Enforcement

Four individuals lost their lives early Friday following a brief six-minute police chase that ended in a two-car collision in Southern California, according to authorities. San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies initiated the pursuit around 1:45 a.m. when a driver suspected of intoxication failed to stop during a traffic check and did not yield.

4 Dead in DUI Chase Crash

The driver managed to evade the deputies and a sheriff's helicopter at high speeds for six minutes. The vehicle, identified as a 2018 Hyundai, eventually collided with a 2010 Ford Mustang at an intersection in Upland, a city located over 33 miles (53.11 kilometers) east of downtown Los Angeles, as per the sheriff's department.

High-Speed Pursuit Ends Tragically

Upon impact, the Hyundai crashed into a pole, splitting into three parts and catching fire. The five male occupants of the Hyundai were ejected from the vehicle. Four were pronounced dead at the scene, while a 13-year-old boy was transported to the hospital and is expected to survive.

The occupants of the Mustang, a 35-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman, were also taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure. The identities of those involved have not been disclosed.

Details Emerge Post-Crash

Deputies later found out that the Hyundai had been reported stolen. Additionally, one of the deceased was found with a loaded gun in their possession, according to a news release from the sheriff's department.

Further details on the incident are currently unavailable. The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to piece together the events leading up to the fatal crash.

The tragic event highlights the dangers of high-speed pursuits and underscores the importance of adhering to traffic laws. Law enforcement continues to urge drivers to comply with traffic stops to prevent such devastating outcomes.
