Deaf Community in Falmouth US Grieves Loss of Beloved Advocates
The close-knit community of deaf and hard of hearing people in Falmouth, US is grieving after the Lewiston shootings that killed beloved members who were ardent advocates.
The deaf and hard of hearing community in Maine, US is mourning the loss of cherished members who were victims in the recent Lewiston shootings. The incident took place at a bowling alley and a bar in Lewiston, causing immense grief among locals. A minimum of four individuals from the deaf community lost their lives during this tragic event, as stated by the Maine Educational Center for the Deaf on Friday.

In total, 18 people were killed while another 13 sustained injuries. Among those who died was Joshua Seal, aged 36 – a sign language interpreter highly regarded within his community. He was participating in a cornhole tournament at Schemengees Bar with friends when he was fatally shot. Over recent years, Seal had made his mark as an interpreter during pandemic briefings held by Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
Elizabeth Seal expressed her sorrow over her husband's death on Facebook saying that he was "a wonderful husband, my best friend, and my soulmate." She added that Joshua was also "an incredible interpreter" besides being a great friend and family member.
An Irreplaceable Loss to Community
Billy Brackett (48), Steve Vozzella (45), and Bryan MacFarlane (41) were other prominent figures from Maine’s deaf community whose lives ended abruptly due to these shootings according to the educational center. The institutions affected by this tragedy include The Maine Educational Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing along with Governor Baxter School for the Deaf situated on Mackworth Island near Portland.
The school premises remained closed following Friday’s shooting but served as a gathering spot for people sharing stories about their loved ones lost in this calamity or simply grieving together. Karen Hopkins - Executive Director revealed how some came to be present there contemplating about what they had lost.
Investigation Underway
The police were still probing the shootings and on the hunt for suspect Robert Card as of Friday afternoon. No speculation has been made about a possible motive behind these heinous acts. The four deaf community members who were killed had ties with both, the Maine Educational Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, and Governor Baxter School for the Deaf.
Joshua Seal was a parent to four deaf children who were part of these institutions' educational programs while Brackett was an alumna with a daughter in early intervention program. MacFarlane too attended this school as did Vozzella's wife Megan. Hopkins expressed how their staff is struggling to cope up because they have lost friends.
In conclusion, this tragic incident has left an indelible mark on Maine’s close-knit community of deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals. The loss suffered by this small community is immense and unimaginable.
