Facebook Parent Meta Layoffs: 3,600 Employees Axed As Mark Zuckerberg Pushes For Efficiency
Meta Platforms Inc. is set to streamline its workforce by dismissing approximately 5% of its employees who are considered the lowest performers. This move, part of CEO Mark Zuckerberg's broader initiative titled the "Year of Efficiency," aims at enhancing the company’s operational effectiveness. Zuckerberg, in a company memo, disclosed the intention to accelerate the process of removing employees who fail to meet the expected standards, a shift from the previous practice of managing performance issues over a year. This decision could lead to around 3,600 job cuts, given Meta's employee count stood at about 72,000 as of September.
"I've decided to raise the bar on performance management and move out low performers faster. We typically manage out people who aren't meeting expectations over the course of a year, but now we're going to do more extensive performance-based cuts during this cycle," Zuckerberg articulated in the memo.

Generous Severance
The targeted reduction is part of an ambition to achieve 10% "non-regrettable" attrition by the end of the current performance cycle, impacting those who have been with the company long enough to undergo a performance review but are deemed underperforming. Meta has promised those affected by the layoffs "generous severance."
In addition to reshaping its workforce, Meta has been actively adjusting its policies and operations. This includes recent modifications to its content moderation policies, which now feature more lenient guidelines on discussions surrounding divisive issues like immigration and transgender rights. These policy changes, presented as measures to promote "free expression," have sparked debate both within the company and publicly. Despite the intent, there has been backlash from employees and advocacy groups concerned about the repercussions on vulnerable groups.
Fact Checking Program Discontinues
Furthermore, Meta announced the discontinuation of its third-party fact-checking program in the U.S., eliciting fears over the proliferation of misinformation on its platforms. Such concerns are especially poignant considering Meta's significant role in shaping public opinion.
Moreover, there has been a scaling back of internal initiatives aimed at fostering workforce diversity. This reduction in diversity efforts has attracted criticism, marking what some perceive as a retreat from Meta's previously declared commitment to inclusivity.
Throughout the past year, Meta has already implemented several rounds of layoffs, focusing on realigning its teams and cutting costs to bolster profitability. These measures, coupled with the recent announcement, reflect Meta's ongoing efforts to refine its operations and policy direction under Zuckerberg's efficiency drive. Amidst these strategic adjustments and policy shifts, Meta's commitment to severance for those affected underscores its attempt to navigate these changes with a degree of consideration for its workforce.
