Expulsion of South African Ambassador by USA Viewed as Minor Issue by President Ramaphosa

South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the recent expulsion of Ambassador Ebrahim Rasool from the US, describing it as a minor setback in bilateral relations. The incident followed comments by Rasool that angered US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who declared Rasool persona non grata on social media. Despite the controversy, Ramaphosa expressed hope for a resolution.

Ramaphosa Calls US Ambassador Expulsion Minor

Ramaphosa spoke to journalists on Monday, marking his first public comments since Rubio's post on Friday. Rubio criticised Rasool as a "race-baiting politician" and stated that he was no longer welcome in the US. This reaction came after Rasool's remarks during a discussion hosted by the Mapungubwe Institute for Strategic Reflection.

Diplomatic Tensions and Reactions

Rasool's comments targeted former US President Donald Trump's 'Make America Great Again' campaign, labelling it as rooted in "supremacism." He argued that Trump's approach mobilised supremacist sentiments against those in power, both domestically and internationally. These remarks sparked significant backlash from Rubio and others.

The South African government has been cautious in its response, refraining from defending Rasool outright. Some diplomatic colleagues, speaking anonymously, suggested that Rasool had overstepped his role. "As a former Ambassador to the US and a former Premier of the Western Cape Province, he should have known better," one colleague remarked.

Impact on Bilateral Relations

Relations between South Africa and the US have been strained since South Africa took Israel to the International Court of Justice over alleged genocide in Palestine last year. Additionally, Trump's administration halted funding for South African health projects, affecting efforts to combat HIV/AIDS.

Trade tensions have also escalated due to Trump's imposition of high import tariffs. Further complicating matters is a false claim about land expropriation from white Afrikaner farmers in South Africa. Trump offered these farmers resettlement in the US, intensifying tensions.

Efforts to Mend Relations

Despite these challenges, Ramaphosa remains optimistic about improving ties with the US. He emphasised the importance of maintaining strong political and trade relations between the two nations. "We cannot be ignored by the US because we are such an important player," Ramaphosa stated.

The US has sent a diplomatic note verbale regarding Rasool's situation. Ramaphosa confirmed that Rasool would return to South Africa to provide a full report on the matter. Meanwhile, South Africa is engaging with US envoys from various sectors to address concerns and strengthen relations.

Improving relations with the US is a priority for South Africa, given that it is their second-largest trading partner after China. Ramaphosa stressed the need to ensure that relations remain on solid ground for mutual benefit.
