'Explosion' at US embassy in Myanmar explained as safety drill
Yangon, July 25: While theories of all sorts, including an attack on the US government, were doing the rounds in the wake of an explosion at the American Embassy here on Sunday, local sources said the explosion was actually a triggering of a fire alarm which happened during a safety drill which was underway on Sunday night, Chinese state media Xinhua reported.
It was said the embassy used a tear gas grenade during the drill, triggering the embassy's fire alarm system and those in the sourroundings around 8 pm local time (7 pm IST). Smoke was also seen as a result while some even got a soul smell, said other reports.

The embassy later tendered an apology for not informing the police beforehand. A press conference was due to be held on Monday morning on the issue.
