Explore The Afterlife: Singapore's Hell Theme Park Takes A Dead Serious Approach
Singapore's Hell's Museum, located in Haw Par Villa, showcases intense depictions of afterlife punishments. It blends Buddhism, Taoism, Hinduism, and Confucianism in over 1,000 statues and dioramas, offering a deep cultural and philosophical exploration.
Singapore's Hell's Museum offers a unique experience with its intense depictions of punishments in the afterlife.
Located within Haw Par Villa Park, it features gory scenes like demons impaling sinners and people drowning in blood.

This is not your typical theme park attraction. The museum showcases over 1,000 statues and dioramas that reflect Asian culture, faith, and philosophy. Visitors are encouraged to explore the 10 Courts of Hell, which depict various punishments for earthly sins.
For example, corruption leads to being frozen in ice at court two, while rapists are thrown into boiling oil at court seven.
Singapore Theme Park: Religious Perspectives on Afterlife
Eisen Teo, the chief curator of Hell's Museum, explained that the 10 Courts of Hell result from a blend of Buddhism, Taoism, Hinduism, and Confucianism. "The sculptures and dioramas are a visual dissection of many classics, stories and moral values that many Singaporeans have and are familiar with," Teo said.
Visitor Gin Goldberg said that she wasn't surprised by the differing religious views on the afterlife. "One person's heaven would be another person's hell," she remarked, as reported by NDTV citing AFP.
Unique Attraction Amidst Mainstream Tourism
Haw Par Villa stands out from Singapore's mainstream attractions like Marina Bay Sands' luxury shops or Gardens by the Bay's towering "supertrees." Built-in 1937 by entrepreneur Aw Boon Haw, co-developer of Tiger Balm pain relief rub, the park is fondly remembered by older generations but struggles to attract younger visitors.
To appeal to Gen Z and millennials, Journeys—the firm managing the park—has hosted rave parties and private events. These events are held away from religious exhibits to maintain respect. "After they came here (for the parties) they fell in love with the quirky, eccentric park," said Savita Kashyap, Journeys' executive director.
A Blend of Folklore and Modern Appeal
While Haw Par Villa isn't solely focused on the afterlife or raves, it also displays scenes from Chinese folklore such as "Romance of the Three Kingdoms." However, its hellish attractions remain a significant draw for visitors.
Not everyone finds it appealing though. A Filipina visitor shared that she wouldn't be returning soon due to its frightening nature. "It's very scary," she commented as she left, as per the media reports.
The museum's unique approach to showcasing different religious perspectives on punishment and morality makes it a distinctive part of Singapore's cultural landscape. Despite its eerie themes, it continues to attract curious visitors looking for an unconventional experience.
