EU migrant crisis: 50 refugees found dead in truck in Austria, say Police

Vienna, Aug 27: As many as 50 refugees found dead in a truck found in Austria on Thursday, police said.

The truck was spotted by police on the A4 motorway near the town of Parndorf, apparently since Wednesday, Hans Peter Doskozil, police chief in the province of Burgenland was quoted as saying.

A police manhunt has been launched to find the driver, who is suspected of smuggling the victims into the country.

"Everyone had been "shaken" by news that up to 50 migrants had been found dead in a truck in Austria," said German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Tens of thousands of people, mainly from Africa and the Middle East, try to reach Europe by sailing the sea, often dangerously packed into small vessels that were never designed to cross the Mediterranean.
