EU Diplomat Calls on US Lawmakers to Rethink Omission of Ukraine Aid in Stop-Gap Budget Bill

The European Union’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, urged American lawmakers on Sunday to rethink their decision to exclude financial aid for Ukraine from a temporary budget bill that Congress passed with the aim of preventing a federal government shutdown. The legislation approved on Saturday, which ensures the functioning of the federal government until November 17, omitted provisions for additional aid to Ukraine. This move was contrary to White House preferences but in line with an increasing trend among Republican lawmakers.

Surprise and Disappointment at Last-Minute Agreement

US-Ukraine aid

Borrell expressed surprise and disappointment at this last-minute agreement after his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv. He assured that despite this setback from the US side, the EU would continue its support for Ukraine against Russian aggression. "I have hope that this will not be a definitive decision and Ukraine will continue having the support of the US," said Borrell.

The Call for Better Arms Support

The Spanish diplomat further emphasized on the need for better military support to help Ukrainians successfully counteract Russia's existential threat. "We are facing an existential threat. Ukrainians are fighting with all their courage and capacities, and if we want them to be successful, then you have to provide them with better arms, and quicker," he added.

Ukrainian Officials Remain Hopeful

Despite these developments in Washington D.C., Ukrainian officials remain optimistic about continued US backing. Andriy Yermak, head of Ukraine's presidential office reiterated America's unchanged relationship status with Ukraine despite recent legislative changes stating: "America's relationship with Ukraine has not changed". This statement reflects optimism amidst concerns over international commitment towards aiding Ukraine in its ongoing conflict.

In conclusion, while there is some concern regarding America’s current stance on financial aid to Ukraine, there is also hope. The European Union has pledged its continued support and there is optimism that the US will reconsider its decision. The Ukrainian officials' faith in the unchanged relationship with America signifies their belief in long-standing alliances and diplomatic ties. However, this incident underscores the importance of international solidarity when dealing with global issues such as territorial conflicts and invasions.
