Ethiopia: Over 229 People Die In Landslide
Local officials in southern Ethiopia have reported that more than 200 individuals lost their lives in two landslides. The initial incident in the Gofa zone occurred due to heavy rain, followed by a second landslide that struck those aiding the first victims.
The disaster took place in Kencho-Shacha, resulting in the tragic deaths of 148 men and 81 women. Alemayehu Bawdi from the Southern Regional State confirmed the fatalities and mentioned that search and rescue operations are still ongoing.

Reports indicate that five individuals were rescued and are currently receiving medical attention. Many of the deceased were individuals who had rushed to help those affected by the initial landslide. Efforts are underway to provide shelter and food to those impacted by the disaster.
The region of Gofa in the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' Region (SNNPR) has faced similar tragedies in the past. The recent landslides are part of a broader issue in Ethiopia, where climate-related challenges like droughts and excessive rainfall are affecting millions and leading to severe consequences.
