End Of Russia-Ukraine War? US Envoys Head To Moscow With 30-Day Ceasefire Proposal

On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump announced that negotiators were en route to Moscow to propose a 30-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine.

"We've got people going to Russia right now," Trump stated, confirming that envoys had been dispatched to present the ceasefire proposal to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Trump expressed optimism that Putin would accept the US-backed truce, which Ukraine had already agreed to.

"I hope he's going to have a ceasefire," the US President told reporters at the White House.

Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky cautioned that the United States would issue a "strong" response and apply pressure on Moscow should it reject the ceasefire, which has already resulted in tens of thousands of casualties.

Meanwhile, the Kremlin, in its initial remarks on the proposal, confirmed that it was awaiting further details from Washington.

Since Russia launched its invasion in February 2022, the ongoing conflict has claimed tens of thousands of lives.

The joint US-Ukrainian initiative represents a significant step towards securing a truce, particularly after Trump had previously removed Zelensky from the White House and halted military aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine.

The United States later reinstated its support after Ukraine accepted the ceasefire proposal in discussions held in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday.

Earlier today, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasised that the US was seeking Russia's unconditional acceptance of the ceasefire proposal. "That's what we want to know - if they're prepared to do it unconditionally," Rubio said.

"If the response is 'yes', then we know we've made real progress, and there's a genuine chance for peace. If their response is 'no', it would be highly unfortunate and would reveal their true intentions," he added.
