Eminent South Africans Reflect on Ratan Tata's Lasting Impact on Business and Philanthropy
Ratan Tata was cremated with full state honours in India on Thursday. Prominent South Africans paid tribute to the influential businessman, remembering his connections with their country. The former chairman of Tata Group passed away on Wednesday at the age of 86. His contributions to globalisation and India's economic rise were widely acknowledged.

Anant Singh, a renowned South African filmmaker, expressed his admiration for Tata. "Ratan Tata’s passing leaves a huge void in the Indian business fraternity, but he leaves a legacy that will endure for generations to come as he pioneered globalisation and India’s progression into an economic powerhouse," Singh stated. He described Tata as an inspirational leader and philanthropist with a generous heart.
Influence on South Africa-India Relations
The South Africa–India CEO Forum, co-chaired by Singh and Tata, was initiated in 2006 in Johannesburg. It aimed to enhance trade between the two nations. Tata visited South Africa several times to launch business initiatives for South African presidents. Singh fondly recalled a conversation where Tata expressed his interest in films and mentioned enjoying some of Singh's work.
Tarina Patel, a South African actress of Indian origin, shared her tribute on iol.co.za. "Ratan Tata was not only a business icon and philanthropist but also my mentor, my friend, and a guiding light throughout my life and career," Patel wrote. She first met Tata during an investment council weekend in South Africa in 2007.
Patel highlighted Tata's ability to inspire people and his unwavering support during crucial moments in her life. She remembered how he regularly checked on her family while she cared for her sick father in Chennai. His stories of global experiences left a lasting impression on her.
Legacy of Global Harmony
Patel admired Tata's efforts to promote global harmony through his business acumen and geopolitical awareness. "His business prowess, combined with his goodwill and even temperament, was instrumental in advancing relationships between countries and fostering global peace," she said. His calm demeanour and dedication to peaceful solutions made a significant impact globally.
Tata's legacy as a forward-thinking business icon will continue to inspire many worldwide. His contributions to fostering international relationships and promoting economic growth are celebrated by those who knew him well.
