Elon Musk's X Takes Legal Action Against Advertisers Following Boycott

Elon Musk's social media platform X has initiated legal action against a group of advertisers. The lawsuit claims that a "massive advertiser boycott" cost the company billions in revenue and breached antitrust laws. The suit was filed on Tuesday in a federal court in Texas.

X Sues Over Ad Boycott

The defendants include the World Federation of Advertisers and its members Unilever, Mars, CVS Health, and Orsted. The lawsuit alleges that the Global Alliance for Responsible Media coordinated an advertising pause after Musk acquired Twitter for $44 billion in late 2022 and made significant changes to its staff and policies.

Allegations of Illegal Boycott

Musk shared news of the lawsuit on X, stating, "now it is war" after two years of diplomacy yielding "nothing but empty words." X CEO Linda Yaccarino also commented, attributing the lawsuit partly to evidence from the US House Judiciary Committee. She claimed this evidence indicated a "group of companies organised a systematic illegal boycott" against X.

The Republican-led committee recently held a hearing to assess whether current laws adequately prevent anticompetitive collusion in online advertising. The lawsuit's allegations focus on the initial period following Musk's acquisition of Twitter, not on more recent disputes with advertisers.

Concerns Over Content

In November 2023, about a year after Musk's purchase, several advertisers began leaving X. They were concerned about their ads appearing next to pro-Nazi content and general hate speech on the platform. Musk exacerbated tensions by endorsing an antisemitic conspiracy theory through his posts.

Musk later accused these departing advertisers of "blackmail" and used profanity to tell them to leave. This incident further strained relationships between X and its advertisers.

The lawsuit aims to address these issues and seeks compensation for the alleged financial losses caused by the boycott. It remains to be seen how this legal battle will unfold and what impact it will have on X's future operations.
