Elon Musk Slams Joe Biden’s Decision To Honour George Soros With Medal of Freedom

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has publicly criticised US President Joe Biden's decision to award billionaire philanthropist George Soros the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

"A travesty that Biden is giving Soros the Medal of Freedom," Musk declared bluntly on X.

Musk Reacts On Soros Getting Awarded

President Biden announced the list of recipients for the prestigious honour on Saturday, recognising 19 individuals for their contributions across politics, philanthropy, sports, and the arts.

Soros, a billionaire investor and founder of the Open Society Foundations, was praised for his "focus on global initiatives that strengthen democracy, human rights, education, and social justice," as stated by the White House.

Other notable awardees this year include former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, football legend Lionel Messi, and actors Michael J Fox and Denzel Washington. Soros' son, Alex Soros, accepted the medal on his behalf.

The decision to honour Soros has drawn mixed reactions, particularly given his prominence as a major donor to Democratic causes and his frequent criticism by Republican figures. Musk and other critics have described the award as politically motivated. However, President Biden defended the honourees as individuals who "embody America's values and contribute to its global standing."

"These 19 individuals are great leaders who have made extraordinary contributions to our country and the world. They defend the values of America, even when under attack," Biden stated during the announcement.

Soros has long been a controversial figure in global politics, with Republican leaders accusing him of leveraging his wealth to exert undue influence.

His involvement has also sparked debates in India. During the Winter Session of Parliament in December, BJP president JP Nadda accused the Congress party of being linked to Soros and his organisations. Nadda alleged that the Congress was acting as a "tool" for foreign forces attempting to destabilise India, citing supposed ties between Congress leader Sonia Gandhi and Soros-funded initiatives.

In response, Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge dismissed the allegations as baseless, accusing the BJP of trying to distract from pressing socio-economic challenges. The heated exchange caused multiple adjournments in both houses of Parliament.

Soros' influence, often viewed as controversial, extends beyond borders. His Open Society Foundations have faced significant pushback in countries such as Hungary and Russia, where his efforts are frequently portrayed as foreign interference.
