Elon Musk to Host Live Chat with German Far-Right Leader Alice Weidel, Raising Political Concerns
Elon Musk is set to host a live-streamed discussion on his social media platform, X, with Alice Weidel, a leader of Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. This event, scheduled for Thursday at 7 pm in Germany (1800 GMT), has sparked concerns across Europe about Musk's potential influence on the upcoming national election in Germany.

Musk's involvement in politics is not new. Last year, he supported Donald Trump's re-election campaign in the United States. Now, with control over a powerful social media platform known for spreading misinformation, Musk is backing the AfD ahead of Germany's February 23 election. On December 20, Musk tweeted, "Only the AfD can save Germany," and later reiterated his support in an article for the Welt am Sonntag newspaper.
Concerns Over Political Influence
The Tesla and SpaceX CEO's political activities are causing alarm throughout Europe. In addition to endorsing the AfD, Musk has called for the release of jailed UK anti-Islam extremist Tommy Robinson and labelled British Prime Minister Keir Starmer as an "evil tyrant." There are also worries that Musk might interfere in Poland's presidential election in May.
The European Commission is closely monitoring Musk's online chat. The commission has accused X of violating the bloc's digital rulebook designed to protect internet users from online harm. Officials acknowledge Musk's right to express his views but stress that platforms must not amplify illegal content like hate speech or misinformation related to elections.
Regulatory Scrutiny and AfD's Position
The commission is investigating whether X complies with these regulations. Preliminary findings last year indicated that X was in breach due to deceptive blue checkmarks and a lack of transparency and accountability. Regulators continue to examine other potential violations.
In Germany, while Weidel and the AfD do not have widespread support, the party's popularity is growing as some criticisms diminish. However, Germany's domestic intelligence agency has placed the AfD under observation for suspected extremism, leading mainstream parties to avoid collaboration with it.
AfD's Evolution and Electoral Prospects
The AfD was established in 2013 and has gradually shifted further right. Initially focused on opposing bailouts for struggling eurozone countries, its strong opposition to then-Chancellor Angela Merkel's decision to accept large numbers of refugees in 2015 solidified its political presence.
The party has gained traction due to dissatisfaction with Chancellor Olaf Scholz's centre-left coalition government. It aims to become the largest party in three state elections in September, particularly in eastern regions where it enjoys significant support.
The AfD has rejected its extremist label, viewing it as a political move to undermine the party. Despite this, concerns about its influence persist as Germany approaches its national election.
