Elon Musk Retracts Post on Biden and Harris Amidst Backlash
Elon Musk has deleted a controversial post on his social media platform X, where he remarked that "no one is even trying to assassinate" President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. This comment followed an apparent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump while he was golfing. Musk, who acquired the platform for $44 billion in 2022, has nearly 200 million followers and has increasingly aligned with conservative ideologies, endorsing Trump for president.

Controversial Comments and Backlash
Musk's post was a response to DogeDesigner, one of the 700 accounts he follows, who questioned why there was an attempt to kill Trump. The post quickly drew widespread condemnation from users on X, leading to the hashtag "DeportElonMusk" trending on Monday morning. White House spokesperson Andrew Bates criticised Musk's comment, stating, "Violence should only be condemned, never encouraged or joked about. This rhetoric is irresponsible."
The Tesla CEO has a history of making inflammatory comments and engaging in online feuds with political figures and world leaders. He has previously posted conspiracy theories and faced backlash for remarks perceived as encouraging violence. Last month, the British government urged Musk to act responsibly after he posted comments that officials said could incite violent unrest in the country.
Musk's Approach to Free Speech
When Musk purchased the platform, then known as Twitter, he stated that his primary motivation was to protect free speech rather than profit. He emphasised the importance of having a public platform that is "maximally trusted and broadly inclusive" for the future of civilisation. Sarah Kreps, director of Cornell University's Tech Policy Institute, observed that Musk has long sought to "push the boundaries of free speech," often making impulsive and unfiltered comments on various political issues.
Early Monday, after removing the controversial post about Trump, Musk wrote on X: "Well, one lesson I've learned is that just because I say something to a group and they laugh doesn't mean it's going to be all that hilarious as a post on X." This statement reflects his occasional tendency to retract or double down on provocative remarks.
International Repercussions
X is currently banned in Brazil due to a conflict between Musk and a Brazilian Supreme Court judge over issues related to free speech, far-right accounts, and misinformation. This ban highlights the international implications of Musk's actions on his social media platform.
Musk's recent joke about impregnating Taylor Swift after she endorsed Harris also sparked controversy. While he has removed some posts in the past, he often maintains or even intensifies his stance on contentious issues.
The billionaire's actions continue to draw attention and criticism from various quarters. His approach to free speech and his willingness to engage in provocative commentary remain subjects of intense debate.
Musk's influence on social media and his alignment with conservative ideologies have significant implications for public discourse. His actions on X will likely continue to shape conversations around free speech and online behaviour.
