Election Day Voting Proceeds Smoothly Across the Nation with Minor Delays and Issues

Voting on Election Day across the country proceeded mostly without issues, despite some minor disruptions due to weather, ballot printing errors, and technical glitches. Cait Conley from the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency noted these were anticipated and managed events. The agency did not report any significant national incidents affecting election security.

Smooth Election Day Voting with Minor Delays

In Pennsylvania, initial reports of Republican poll watchers being denied entry at certain polling sites were quickly addressed. A judge extended voting hours by two hours in Cambria County due to a software glitch with ballot-scanning machines. Officials confirmed that no voters were turned away, and all ballots would be counted.

Technical Issues and Weather Challenges

Technical problems in Champaign County, Illinois, and Louisville, Kentucky, caused brief voting delays but were resolved promptly. In Maricopa County, Arizona, voting was delayed when a worker forgot a key. Missouri faced flooding that made one polling site difficult to access and caused a power outage at another, necessitating the use of a generator.

Despite rain in several states, voters remained determined to cast their ballots. Mary Roszkowski from Racine, Wisconsin, expressed this sentiment by saying, "We'll be like post office workers: in rain or snow or sleet," after voting in windy conditions.

Security Concerns and False Threats

Maine experienced false reports of shooters at three high schools used as polling places; however, voting continued as police confirmed these were hoaxes. In Georgia, Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger reported bomb threats at polling locations that were deemed non-credible. The FBI identified multiple non-credible bomb threats originating from Russian email domains.

The smooth operation of Election Day was aided by millions of Americans who voted early. Record numbers of early voters were seen in battleground states like Georgia and North Carolina. By Tuesday, over 82 million ballots had been cast nationwide, surpassing half the total votes from the previous presidential election.

Early Voting Trends and Challenges

Republican voters participated in early voting at higher rates than in previous elections. This shift followed efforts by Trump and the Republican National Committee to counter Democrats' early voting advantage. Early voting proceeded without major issues except for some expected glitches.

North Carolina faced challenges from Hurricane Helene last month but managed to ensure residents could vote despite power outages and damaged roads. The North Carolina Board of Elections reported no issues on Election Day.

Disruptions and Security Measures

Besides hurricanes in North Carolina and Florida, arson attacks damaged ballots in two drop boxes near the Oregon-Washington border. Authorities are searching for the suspect responsible for these acts.

The absence of significant problems hasn't stopped Trump or the RNC from alleging fraud or interference during early voting. They have also claimed Democrats are recruiting noncitizens to vote without evidence. Research shows noncitizen voting is rare due to severe penalties.

Election Integrity and Misinformation

A case of noncitizen voting occurred last month in Michigan when a Chinese student cast an illegal ballot, resulting in felony charges. This election marks the first presidential vote since Trump lost to Joe Biden four years ago and attempted to overturn the results.

A majority of Republicans still believe Trump's false claim that Biden's win was illegitimate despite audits affirming Biden's victory. A recent survey showed Republicans remain sceptical about their votes being counted accurately this year.

Efforts to Restore Voter Confidence

To rebuild confidence amid false claims of fraud, Republican lawmakers have passed new voting restrictions in over a dozen states since 2020. These include reducing mail ballot windows and adding ID requirements.

On the weekend before Election Day, Trump falsely claimed election rigging against him and insisted on declaring a winner on election night before all votes are counted. Vice President Kamala Harris urged voters not to fall for such tactics aimed at undermining confidence in elections.

Election Officials Face Challenges

Local election officials have endured harassment and threats over four years of election-related conspiracy theories. This has led to high turnover and increased security measures at polling sites.

No major cyberactivity has affected election offices; however, foreign actors have used fake profiles to spread disinformation. US intelligence officials attributed fake videos alleging fraud to Russia's influence operations aimed at inciting violence even after votes are cast.

Jen Easterly urged Americans to rely on state and local officials for accurate election information amid unprecedented disinformation campaigns by foreign adversaries. She emphasised that foreign entities should not influence democracy through misinformation efforts.
