Leading Egyptian Opposition Figure Targeted in High-Tech Spyware Attack
Security researchers report that an opposition politician in Egypt was targeted with spyware after declaring his presidential candidacy. The alleged state-sponsored attack led Apple to issue urgent software updates for its devices.
The Egyptian government is reportedly using advanced spyware technology to target opposition figures, according to a recent revelation by security researchers. The incident came to light after Ahmed Altantawy, a former Egyptian lawmaker and leading opposition politician, was targeted with the Predator spyware following his announcement of a presidential bid. This has raised serious concerns about cyber-espionage activities being used as political tools in Egypt.
Spyware Attack on Opposition Politician

Security researchers from Citizen Lab and Google’s Threat Analysis Group discovered last week that attempts were made to hack into Altantawy's mobile devices through the Vodafone Egypt network. The attackers configured his connection so that visiting certain websites without the secure HTTPS protocol would automatically trigger an infection process with the Predator spyware.
Bill Marczak, one of the researchers involved from Citizen Lab at University of Toronto, declined to provide further details on how he and Google researcher Maddie Stone uncovered this sophisticated exploit chain. However, he confirmed that it was sent via SMS and WhatsApp links originating from within Egypt.
Predator Spyware: A Potent Cyber Weapon
Predator is not just any ordinary piece of malicious software; once installed on a device, it transforms a smartphone into an eavesdropping tool capable of remotely transmitting data back to its operator. It essentially turns victims' phones into surveillance devices under their control - an alarming capability considering its potential misuse in politically motivated attacks.
Implications for Security
This discovery has profound implications for digital security worldwide. In response to this threat revelation by Citizen Lab and Google's Threat Analysis Group, Apple Inc., whose products were among those vulnerable due to associated vulnerabilities, rushed out operating system updates for iPhones, iPads, Mac computers and Apple Watches.
The fact that such powerful spyware could be used to target opposition figures raises serious questions about the extent of digital surveillance in Egypt. It highlights a disturbing trend where governments are increasingly using cyber-espionage tools for political ends, potentially infringing on personal freedoms and democratic processes.
Conclusion
This incident underscores the urgent need for robust cybersecurity measures at all levels - individual, corporate, and governmental. It is also a stark reminder that spyware technologies can be exploited not just by criminal hackers but also by state actors with far-reaching implications for privacy and democracy. As technology continues to evolve and become more sophisticated, so do the threats we face. Therefore, it's crucial that security researchers continue their vital work in exposing such threats to help safeguard our digital world.
